Location: Fairfield, IA | Before posting, I looked around on the HDS threads and can't say I found the answer I am looking for.
I have a X-135. I am getting moisture behind the screen but other than that it appears to work OK. Contacted Lowrance and for $150, they would sell me a new one with a 6 month warranty. This model is now discontinued. I am debating what to do.
I have a HST-WSBL transducer with this model. Called Lowrance to see what current models used this transducer and he said go with any of the HDS models. Using the same transducer eliminates the hassle of mounting a new one.
My question is: I thought the improvement of the HDS unit over the other current product was related to improvements not only in the display but in the ability to pick up detail. If the HDS uses the same transducer as my X-135, what is it that makes the detail so much better?
With the basic HDS out of the box, do you get the great pictures and functionality everyone raves about? Or is there another add-on that takes it to the level you see on the Lowrance site? I am not talking about anything to do with side scanning, just the normal sonar finding capability.
Dave.

If you take a look at these two links, the Display type is different.
X-135:

HDS-5:

The X-135 has a Monochrome Film SuperTwist, 16-level grayscale where as the HDS-5 display has a 16-bit color SolarMAX PLUS TFT. That's one of two main differences. The other difference is the sonar output power. The X-135 has a max of 4000 watts, the HDS-5 has a max 250W peak-to-peak (31W RMS) actual; 30,000W peak-to-peak analog equivalent W.
These two things are your main differences. The more output, the more detail a transducer will pick up and relay back to your unit. |

Location: Kodiak, AK | To summarize what T.J. said, yeah, the HDS is day and night better. I installed an HDS8 last fall, and holy crap....! I left my transducer installed from my 25C, and plug-and-play it was just amazing the detail and what I could see out of the box. They are as amazing out of the box as they say they are. |
