Posts: 233 Location: Iowa | I'm looking at buying a graph for my boat. Right now I have a lowrance ifinder h2o for a gps and have experience with a 113hd on my friends boat. I was wondering what humminbird's gps is like? Is it similiar to how lowrance has there gps features set up. Any features that people like or dislike from one brand over the other? Jeremy

Posts: 1023 | i just bought an eagle fishelite 642c for under 400 at cabelas. It is a great unit (colour) at a very discounted price and the sonar is supposed to be very sensitive. However, in my unit you are not able to set the safety depth hiliting at less than 15 feet. This would be a good thing to check out so that you can precisely hilite all water up to 8, 9 or say 12' baby blue - depending on weed growth... This would make it a lot easier to follow edges... Some units even allow you to hilite a preferred fishing depth range in a different colour - which would be really cool.

Posts: 422 | check out the Humminbird forums at the In Depth Outdoors fishing website. Some great unit comparisons available there. both are quality units. Good luck! http://www.idofishing.com/forum/subpostlist.php/Board/toys/toys-for...

Posts: 1455 Location: Kronenwetter, WI | 4reukmuskies--- Great link! I did some poking around on that sight and found this great information about the new Lakemaster Insight chip and how some AWSOME 3d displays can be had from the HDS units---however these insight chips will NOT WORK ON HUMMINBIRDS: http://www.idofishing.com/forum/showflat.php/Number/860962/93/fpart... I thought I had my sights set on a HB 1157c, but after seeing those Insight 3d displays, I thought UH-OH....that 3d contour is REALLY sharp with that Insight chip via LOWRANCE HDS! SO.....I began thinking Humminbird might not be the way to go after all!!! SO...... I went to the Humminbird site and linked from there to the Navionics Hotmaps PLATNUM and found HUMMIBIRDS WILL run 3d DISPLAYS from the NAVIONICS PLATNUM CHIP. SO.....NOW my question is, are the Humminbirds with Navionics Platnum 3d chips capable of displaying the same quality of image as the Lakemaster Insight on the Lowrance HDS? This is getting pretty confusing, no? Okay, edit to post....NOW I found a really cool feature on the HB units called "Water Level Offset". This is a feature that allows the user to adjust water level display according to what is an all too common issue now in the upper midwest, namely, extremely low water levels that cause the chips to read deeper than the lake ACTUALLY is. Say lake X is down 3ft. The user adjusts the map to correct for this so the map accurately displays current water levels. ...another cool feature I found for the HB is called SHALLOW water highlight that allows the user to highlight not only light blue below, say 15 ft, but to highlight in RED all water 3ft or less NOW (as a result of the "Water Level Offset" and low water conditions) so the user can not only get an accurate reading of a 'water-deprived' lake, but also highlight in RED an accurate current indicator of dangerously shallow water created by the low water conditions. Here is the page with that information: http://www.jasonhalfenoutdoors.com/Lakemaster.html That's pretty cool stuff. Edited by Cowboyhannah 1/31/2010 9:01 PM

Posts: 1455 Location: Kronenwetter, WI | Really cool video demonstrating above information. This is on a Humminbird, but is Lakemaster exclusive, so likely these features are available on HDS as well? http://www.idofishing.com/videos/viewvid.php/Number/825744/lakemast...

Posts: 422 | Cowboyhannah, Yeah, I have been checking out that website for a long time and there is a great deal of info on there. The side imaging comparisons are really cool. I don't have the jack for a side imaging unit yet, but I have had good luck w/ humminbird in the past so I just purchased a 788C for my console...I am really looking forward to using those humminbird specific features on the lake master chips. Pretty cool stuff!!

Posts: 1455 Location: Kronenwetter, WI | Yes---Fishton's side by side screen caps of the Lowrance and Humminbird's 'downscan' view of the same structure at the same time are compelling. His Lowrance view is nutz. Can't figure out why there is such a difference, but Fishton seems to understand it. I tried looking up his School of Sonar, but couldn't find it. There are some guys on there that really know their stuff. Personally, I think I'm going to focus more on the mapping features for my purposes because frankly I'm not smart enough to understand the differences in their scanning technologies. I figure I'll fish the structure according to the mapping capabilities and forego the scanning technology for a while---can't afford it anyhow.
