I am having a little problem with etex. I brush on the etex and as it dries I find little dimples that were not there when it was wet. Am I not applying it heavy enough? Ideas?

You did not degas it, you have to blow on it or a torch on low flame and wave across it. If you blow on it you will see the bubbles pop on the surface. The stuff I use does not do it much, the guys that use E tex on here can help a little more.

What you mean by dimples? Could be fisheyes...
If youve touched the lure and left grease from your fingers, the etex flows away from the spot, leaving "dents" and even bare sports. Some pearl paints have also given me fisheyes.
Often fixed with the next layer, and make sure you use enough etex.
I always use gloves while painting and clearcoating.

Water-based paints are sensitive to touch prior to clear-coating...meaning that if you touch them, you will often find fish-eyes in the areas you touched after you clear-coat the bait.

But, the first thing I would look at is how well you are mixing the envirotex lite and I'd also ask if you are transferring it to another contain prior to application to the baits.

Failure to thoroughly mix it often leads to fish-eyes...probably the number one cause.

Even when thoroughly mixed, it is a very good idea to pour the mix into a new container because unmixed envirotex often sticks to the side of the container, stay there until it slides down the side and is picked up and applied as you used up the remainder in the container. Solution: pour it into another container...every time.

Lastly, I have had some problem with separating etex and fish-eyes occasionally if I apply it immediately after mixing it. Doesn't always happen, but it does happen on occasion. Solution? Just let it sit for at least 5 minutes after mixing. Don't know why but that seems to eliminate the possibility of fish-eyes and other separations on the first few baits clear-coated.

Hope that helps.

Hi there, all of the above just about cover all the causes of dimples, fisheyes or whatever you want to call them. When this happens the second coat usually will cover up any flaws. One other thing that caused fisheyes for me was when I would spray on certain brands of glitter from a can. Not all brands do it. To correct this, I would spray on the glitter, let it dry and then spray on a coat of Krylon Acrylic Clear Gloss. Let it dry & then put on your etex. Like what was mentioned in the above posts, make sure it is mixed very well & let it set for at least 5 minutes before applying to de-gas it. Hope this helps. Ken

The fisheyes are caused by one of two things:

1. You didn't apply the etex heavy enough, or
2. You touched the lure with your bare hands after painting it. Don't ever touch the lure with your bare hands after priming. Oils on your hands will cause the dimpling, it took me a year to figure this out!!

To Jed's point...I wear non-powder latex gloves through the entire process of finishing a lure.

ha ha Jed, only took me 11 months to figure it out!

Sure rub it in James! I can remember having entire groups of lures with dimples and I couldn't figure it out! Finally one day someone at TU said something about "contamination" and I started wondering about my fingers touching the lures......got some latex gloves, problem solved.
