Went to balance a glider today, opened up my bucket of water that I test them in and it was frozen!! I got out a hammer, beat the ice for several minutes until I had a hole big enough to drop the lure into. Of course I then had put my hand in to fish it out after each test.........brrrrrrrr. I can't test baits at my favorite pond or the river because they are both frozen! Six inches of new snow yesterday.........sigh, I will be glad when winter is over and it's just beginning.

Local public pool! They let me do testing in the pool if I go in real early. Then you can cast too Put a few plastic fish in (the kind you can wind up) and your in heaven with a little imagination.

For buoyancy and float testing, nothing beats the holding tank on the back of my toilet. Always full!

I like the pool option for testing action. I have thought to ask on a few occasions but ultimately figured that the pool owner(s) would think I am nuts. I do have a few hydro dams locally that have open water on the discharge year round that can be used for some testing.

im chuckling jed. your not alone. my float tank is in my heated shop. but water testing is a crusher. opening snaps in freezing weather sucks.. the older ya get the tougher it becomes. . what ever happened to global warming?

Its over here, weve barely got any snow here, and we're in the middle of december... I remember some 20+ yrs ago, me and some friends started walking to Denmark, and I think we got close to 1/4 of the way on the sea ice and were stopped by an opening a larger tug boat had made...

The best way I've found to tank test lures is an old 10 gallon aquarium. If ya got a place to put it and it won't freeze. That way you can watch the lure you are working on from the side also.

I've got a 30-gallon aquariun for testing bouyancy, if I want to check action I have to go to a boat launch on Lake Michigan, and that is frozen now. I used to work for the local water utility so I could test year-round, now I have to wait for a warm up before I can throw anything.

Things warmed up enogh here that part of my winter testing pond has thawed which is working out good. In the summer this particular pond is covered in duck weed but in the winter it is perfect for lure testing.
