This big fish is probably not an indicator that the Larry has recovered from its VHS outbreak. VHS (in the St. Lawrence) peaked a few years ago; it takes close to 20 to produce a 50" muskie, much less a 57". And, unfortunately, YOY counts have been going down after the outbreak. Nonetheless, I am optimistic the Larry will rebound. I think it's just a matter of time.

Posts: 7 | Yes esox50 you are right about it taking a few years to recover from the VHS outbreak , but this year we boated muskies from 36" to 58" and lots of them , the young of the year counts are only one indicator of the health of the fishery, with the invasion of round gobies and zebra mussles spawning areas are changing and i think we will have to adapt accordingly when conducting siening in the following years , have no doubt that the St Lawrence is strong and healthy! MERRY Christmas and Happy New Year Bill From the sounds of things I, too, have no doubt the St. Lawrence is strong and healthy. That's good news that fish from lots of size/year classes were caught last year. Looking forward to helping you guys with the seining this coming year, too!

Posts: 22 | TTurn - 12/5/2009 11:49 PM Is that the biggest fish caught in 09? Congrats, what was it caught on? No it's not the biggest fish caught this year. Rich Clarke, another St. Lawrence Guide, caught a slightly larger fish a few days later! Check it out... http://www.1000islandsfishing.com/muskie.htm
