I recently bought a pen 209m but haven't had a chance to use it yet. There are things that can be tightened and loosened by the levelwind and in the middle on the left side. I do not understand exactly what they do. Also, do those little shakespeare clip on line counters do any good? I would have bought a line counter reel, but this penn was only $30 (I still hope to go back and buy the penn 9 thats the same price)

I use one of those Shakespeare line counters on one of my rods and have had no problems with them. I prefer a line counter reel, but the clip on works fine in a pinch.

Zach,
I use Penn 209's exclusively for trolling. They are a fine, inexpensive trolling reel. I have not found a need for line counters, but I can see where they could come in handy for some. I just use a system of "pulls" to measure out me line. That has always been accurate enough for my fishing. Just move the boat at a consistant rate of speed each time you let out line. Point the rod to the back of the boat and extend it to the front, this is one "pull". Stop and measure how much line has come out. You will be surprised at how consitant each pull is once you get the hang of it. Once you know the distance of each pull, you can measure out line by the number of "pulls" you put out. The key is using the same lenght rods and consistant boat speed. Then it just a matter of figuring out how deep each bait runs with "X" number of feet of line out.

The two knobs on the left side of your reel are bearing covers. They cover and protect the bearings on that side. The one on the right (handle side) is an adjustment to set how much tension you want on the spool (how easy it will turn), screw it in and the spool will turn harder, screw it out and the spool will turn easier. The knob is really putting pressure on the worm gear in the front, but it has the effect of making the spool turn with more resistance as the knob is tightened.

I have a few Penn 209's that I use for trolling and have never had any problems with them. A great trolling reel! As far as line counting, I count the line guide as it goes back and forth. One time across lets out 7 feet. Try to keep it simple!

They work great and are very simple with clickers that can be heard unlike some reels. Like Bill said one pass is 7 or 8ft. I run 20lb mono and 8 passes will give me 20ft on most cranks.

Besides they double for really nice Lake Michigan reels for Kings also!![:p]
