Been shopping on ebay for a video camers I can use to see a sucker get munched and to check out some structures I fish. My question is, are they worth the expense & is there a model that works better than others?

There are so many to choose from, I figured I better ask around before I pull the trigger on something I may not be happy with.

Thanks,
Mike

They are worth every penny.
I have an AquaVu explorer 5. I've used it to check out structure and to video troll (coolest stuff I've ever seen fishing).

Aqua-Vu has several good cameras for that application, as does MarCum. Those are the majors at this point. Both were Nature Vision companies, and were bought out when Nature Vision went out of business recently. MarCum sold to the company in Minnesota that was building the units for Nature Vision, and Aqua-Vu sold to a group in Northern Minnesota, so all is well with both companies.

Good people at both companies, too!

friends have the vs380...I have a vs560 and the new 7" lcd...they are a blast to play around with open water fishing...though they can be addicting... i have been amazed at how many fish I have seen on the underwater camera holding just above deep sandgrass for example that don't really show up on the Lowrance...it's also interesting to identify what type of schools of fish, you are seeing on the sonar....where they really shine imo is ice fishing.... fun stuff

Brad, the reason I started looking into one of these is to identify the balls of baitfish I was marking on one of my fave spots up Nort. My Suckers would just go ape $*it but I would only get a quick rip & then a drop. I want to see what's going on next season, and video tape a sucker getting hit would be a fun deal too..

Not to mention there is a snag in another spot I fish & I want to know what the heck that is..

I'm playing the Ebay game right now, fun stuff but I figure better deals wil be found after the holidays.. Either way, I'm getting one that has the capability to do some recording as well.

Happy Holidays
Mike

I only have experience with the Cabela's brand and have had a lot of fun using it under the ice the last few seasons. The beauty of the Cabela's brand is the lifetime warranty. I already returned a non-functioning unit no questions asked.

The cabelas brand ones are marcums the only difference is the wind up for the cable is much better and easier to use on the cabelas brand than the one you get with the marcums. Have a marcum but it broke last season falling off a atv going 30mph on the ice. Looking to get new one I'm sure there will be good deals on them after Christmas.

I have had good luck with the Aqua -Vu cameras both trolling and just watching fish from the boat and under ice. I was asked to speak at Chicago this year on Friday and plan on showing what I know about the set up for trolling and filming the figure 8. I have also been told the Marcum cameras work real nice but have never tried one. Here are some clips from years past, pasted together, you probably seen a lot of them on (Muskies live). I will be showing new stuff from this year at Chicago. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d937lzUSYtg

What are people using to record the video? Is there a special recorder you need to hook up to the tv to record video? Or can you hook it up with a camcorder?

I live in Green Bay and Menards (Yes Menards) has the TV CAM for $75.00
plus $25 rebate. I bought one Saturday and they had about 30 of them at
that time. The link below is an EBay link but this is exactly what Menards
is selling for $50.00

If the camera has a video out option, you can hook your cam corder into it, otherwise Aqua Vu has a DVR, digital recording device that will record onto a chip.

I record to several types of DTE DVR devices. My favorite DVR is a DXG 505V camcorder, it runs about 3 to 4 hours on a set of rechargeable E Cell double A batteries, has a great interface and records to an SD card at 640X480. Since the data is input through the video out from your camera, it is clear, easily formatted to any movie program, and easy overall to work with. ANY video camera recording to an SD card with video in will work. The key is having the Video IN port, which few have. TJ found one on Ebay last winter for $50.

Or, I use the new studio I just put into action incorporating a Dell Mini 10, a just Encase Custom Clearview case, and a few special cables allowing me to record multiple inputs from Aqua-Vu cameras in full color if the unit has a color camera in much higher uncompressed resolution, and the Dell will allow me to record 140 hours straight. The entire studio, including the Aqua-Vu cameras runs off a garden tractor battery (small and light) for a couple days straight. The entire studio cost about $550.00 and I have a Dell Mini 10 to use at work and around the house as the DVR...pretty cool. With a Verizon or AT&T card, I could upload video from the ice....

Thanks Steve! I've been trying to find a low cost one!
All I've come across so far are $250 camcorders, which is total overkill since I don't actually need the 'camera' part of it - just the recorder.

Steve:
That sounds like a awesome system, I have had Good luck with a sony 1080I recording Deck. I have run several cameras of this sytem. I record directly onto Mini DV tapes, this makes editing , real easy. I really like it for play back in the boat and use it like a cam corder if I want to plug into the video out, on say a Aqua Vu.

We've used our Canon units on the ice now and again, but the DTE is really important to me because of the time required to capture the clips on a Mini DV tape. DTE means almost zero capture time, just drop in the file, edit, and export all from the same machine, either my Imac or XPS .Our next major purchase will be the new Firestore CF card unit, IMO the best DTE unit out there.
