| Say you have the center of gravity where you want your front screw eye at, and you want to add the lead ther too. When using thru-wire on a larger lure, that I know how to do. Would lead poured into a larger hole than the screw eye, hold the eye in place? Pour lead in hole first, let it harden, then drill hole in lead for screw eye and epoxy on place?? How dothe pros here do it?? Thanks. |

Location: Land of the Musky | IMO no. The lead is too soft. Now if you can get the screw eye through your lead area and into good wood then I would say yes as long as you are at least .25" into good wood with epoxy cement on the screw eye. JMO,

Location: Freedom, WI | James is right, the lead is to soft. Saw an episode of Infisherman with James Linder losing a muskie due to the eye in lead on a Bagley diver pulling out. Use a very long eye and go into the wood as far as possible (key the lead hole also), I would go about a 1/2 " or more depending on the wood type. I put my weight in from the side and run the eye threw the hole up into the wood. Better safe than sorry. |

| These are all good ideas. What you could do is install the screw eye (epoxied in) into the hole where the lead will be poured, but install if before you poor. Then you can melt lead into the hole and it will help hold the eye in place. I hate drilling into lead, my drill bits always snap off. |

| drilling lead is fairly hard to do, On one of my prototypes I thought it needed more keel weight so I used a small egg sinker and a longer screw eye on the belly hook to test. I had to clean out the hole a little on a 1/4 ounce to get an .072 screw eye through. I ran the bit in reverse to clean it out without snapping the bit. I caught a 38 pounder while testing, to much fun! |

| I had thought of that-putting the eye in first and then adding the lead. Just last night I had a couple of 7" cedar bodies sitting there, so I picked up my hand drill and 12 inch bit. Drilled from the nose to tail, w/o coming out the side. Hadn't tried this in awhile, and only on 12" trolling baits. I have added the lead in the front hole and one is now tumbling after I coated with Etex. Tomorrow I hope to test it in water to see how it sits. The drill thru went really well, just take your time, and back it out every inch to dump the sawdust. May be using this method more if it works out. |
