Posts: 174 Location: Wis. Rapids, WI | A very special day in my heart is Veterans Day. To all our past and present, men and women of our armed forces my family and I say…Thank You!! Bob I hope you don’t mind for saving and keeping your words known. “Definition of a Veteran” A Veteran – whether active duty, retired, national guard or reserve, is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to “The United States of America”, for an amount of “up to and including my life.” That is honor, and there are way too many people in this country who no longer understand it. ----- Semper Fi Bob Pieske

Posts: 2865 Location: Brookfield, WI | I'm of the generation that reached adulthood several years after the end of the Vietnam War when the draft was abolished. We all wished we were hippies. We weren't too bright. If I was a young man right now, I think I would enlist or go to officers school after college. My Father was a proud WWII vet, and his military service really was a major part of what kind of guy he was: loyal, honest, and proud. I've always felt I kind of missed something. Thanks to all those who served and are serving. What you're willing to do is very cool, and very important. Kevin

Thanks to all those who served and are serving. What you're willing to do is very cool, and very important. Kevin I was the first generation of my family NOT to serve. I grew up in the 80's during the resurgence of the hippie era. We didn't wish we were hippies, we WERE hippies, only we didn't really have anything to rebel against, except maybe capitalism, yuppies, and anyone with a job and a paycheck... Not too bright? try freakin STUPID. We laughed at the guys who joined the service, because they were "too dumb" to go to college. We were shaking in our Birkenstocks during the first gulf war, afraid they were going to draft us and cut our hair. Then a funny thing happened... Pretty soon the guys who served were getting out, and they had wives, and kids, and families, jobs, careers. They had direction, ambition, determination, and honor. We had... Well, we had our parents basements to hang out in, and we had our idols like Jerry Garcia, and John Lennon, and our tie-dyes and our peace signs. Between all of us we usually had enough money to buy some cheap beer and some dope to smoke. If I was a young man right now? I'd get my sorry a$$ down to the recruiting office and go do something worthwhile with my life. I'd grow up at 18 and make something out of my life instead of waiting until I was in my 30's to get a clue about how the world works. You gotta stand for something, or you'll fall for anything. The guys out there protecting this country have something that I never will, that they can carry with them their entire lives. That's pride, and honor, a sense of duty, and the satisfaction of knowing they helped to make this country a place worth living in. Edited by esoxaddict 11/11/2009 1:23 PM

I've recently reconnected with a bunch of my buddies from I Co. 3/1 on Facebook, and am thankful to have them back in my life. As I am thankful for have met you this past summer. - Semper Fi. Posts: 484 Location: St. Louis, MO., Marco Is., FL, Nestor Falls, ON | Thanks Kirby and Todd. I read those words about the check some years ago and they stuck in my mind. This past week we celebrated the 234th birthday of the Marine Corps and the 91st anniversary of the Treaty of Versailles which initiated Veteran's Day. The very existence of our country and the American way of life will always depend on the willingness of our citizens to place themselves in harms way to preserve it. In many ways I wish the draft would be reinstated so that the opportunity to "give back" to this country could be experienced by young folks across the social spectrum of the USA. I treasure my years in the Corps and acknowledge that they made me a better person and better businessman. The organizational skills, leadership training and supervision opportunities, not to mention the lessons in honor, dedication and morality, effected major differences in my outlook on life. The friends made there and the memories of shared experiences will never be forgotten. I want to thank every veteran of all branches of service, all police officers, troopers and government agents charged with our protection for their self sacrificing service on our behalf. I am proud to call each of you my brother or my sister. May God protect each of you as you strive to protect us.
