Location: NW WI | IFS Jr. and I are hurting big time after Jr. lost a upper 40's fish on a sucker. My question is: How much do you play the fish? Do you horse her in without regard to tearing out a hook or breaking the hook, or do you set the drag to let the fish take line when it comes to the boat and wants no part of coming close.
Said fish came to the boat 3X, but beyond the reach of the Frabil each time and turned and took off on drag ripping runs. After the third time and while heading away from us the line went slack...and our hearts sunk to the bottom.
FYI - this is only the 2nd fish we've ever had on a sucker. Jr. never got a good look where the hook was. |

Location: The Yahara Chain | They are usually hooked in the corner of the mouth and stay pinned up most of the time. I lost a big one at the net yesterday myself.
I have my drag set loose enough so that when they run they can easily take line. Cold water fish fight hard and a big one will often make a lot of runs. One that I did get in the bag yesterday made five power runs after I got it to the boat the first time. It sounds like you didn't do anything wrong....that's just the way the game goes sometimes. |

Location: Contrarian Island | fight them like you would hooking them with a bait..I err on the side of horsing fish to the net...shorter the fight less chance they can get off...drag on my sucker rods is almost to lock down....loosen only on really big fish...most of the time that isn't needed |
