Posts: 32926 Location: Rhinelander, Wisconsin | Day One: Team Greenberg Triples.. High winds, temps in the middle twenties, and driving snow slowed the bite for most everyone except the Greenbergs. They put three in the boat; a 40.25" 10 minutes before sunrise, a 40.75" 10 minutes after, and a 44" at about 1:30 PM. They added a bonus 39" Pike to lead the bonus Pike division. The weather tomorrow looks a little better, offering slightly warmer temps and far less wind. Skies are to be partly cloudy, and the fish should go! Four fish total so far and three by one team? Crazy stuff.

Posts: 32926 Location: Rhinelander, Wisconsin | There were several 'lost fish' stories yesterday, so the fish moved some. The Greenbergs were trolling Dawgs according to their day one evening interview. Ben Olsen got his big girl a bit ago, and while Paul Hartman was watching, busted another, but it was short.

Posts: 999 | Im just curious as to why after the day one interview Steve would ask them what their hot bite was for them? It is a tournament right? Would anybody fishing the tournament with great success the first day want to be asked that question? I can see telling the world what worked for you once the check is in hand. Not a great interview question in my opinion, maybe im wrong. Craig

Posts: 2323 Location: Stevens Point, WI | The Cass Lake virtual weigh-in took place at the American Legion at 4pm. Third place Team Cornwall cpr'd a 42.5 caught casting a bulldawg, a technique Mike Cornwall said on stage that they don't use much; but it sure paid off today. Team Cornwall cashed a check for a total of $2200.00 including the Tuffy/MAC contingency. Ben Olsen and Eric Elsenpeter came to the stage with a 49 also caught casting a bulldawg which placed them solidly in second place and earned them a check for $1100.00. Ben and Eric also caught two 36''s during a very distinct feeding window this morning when most of the field reported either catching or losing muskies. First place team Kevin and Todd Greenberg tripled yesterday with a 40.5, 40.75, and a 44 trolling bulldawgs along hard bottom point primary and secondary structure edges adjacent to good late summer spots in 10-15 feet of water. The Greenberg's said in their interview that the muskies seemed to be taking the bulldawgs almost like a walleye would take a lure, the trolling rod tip would bounce a few times, then the fish would take the bulldawg and the rod would then buckle back. The Greenberg's also caught a 39" pike to take the big pike division and bringing their total payday to $2050.00. Interestingly, even though the field reported that the muskies were hitting light, once hooked, most of the fish jumped repeatedly which resulted in several lost fish. The anglers said that the true contest wasn't catching the Cass Lake muskies, it was the winds that were at times 30+mph, below freezing temperatures, and snow on near everything that created the biggest challenge. Watch for the full video weigh-in and a compilation of weigh-in images later tonight. Posts: 32926 Location: Rhinelander, Wisconsin | Craig, Many times, the anglers are delighted to tell us where, but not on what, or what on, but not where, and sometimes there's no secret at all. One can't acquire what information is available during an interview without asking! We interview the top highly 'seasoned' Pros on the AIM and FLW Walleye Tour trails (dozens and dozens of interviews per year), and it's sometimes amazing what one can find out about techniques and tactics during an event, especially if a Sponsor's equipment is responsible for the success the Pro has had. If we didn't ask...

Posts: 99 | Only 8 teams participated at MAC Cass Lake Hartmans series musky tournament....that was really sad to say the least, and most everyone traveled quite distances. A couple of them from Iowa & Illinois who traveled 10 hours one way trailering their boat in bad weather to make it up and back! Paul Hartman, Sworrall, MAC and Muskie First are putting on a really good opportunity for MuskyFisherman to get together and share stories and techniques and have a great time out on the water together, people just are not taking advantage of a great offering. Sometimes I think people look at tournaments the wrong way. It really is not about winning. I get into these tournaments cause of the mounds of information I learn while participating. Some times I place...most times I do not, but you know I have never walked away from a tournament empty handed. The experience I obtain and techniques, locations, seasonal patterns, and most of all the memories are just priceless. Our time on the water is what we make of it. Be there...

Posts: 32926 Location: Rhinelander, Wisconsin | Paul Hartman has worked very hard to develop the Hartman Series (MMTT) and does a great job. We expect with the schedule and venue we are offering for 2010, participation will be excellent.

Posts: 231 | Very cool!! Thanks for sharing the updates & overall tournament, Steve. I really enjoy that body of water for sure. Did any of the teams fish Pike Bay? Was Lake Andrusia part of the tourney, or off limits? Thanks again for the qaulity pics & interviews. Chas

Posts: 62 | Did the preregisterd teams that chose not to fish pay an entry fee? If it was me, I would fish it rain or shine if an entry fee was already paid. Either way, all hail the Bulldawg!!

Posts: 829 Location: Maple Grove, MN | Steve, If you want to increase participation, you may need to lower the entry fees. $750 or even $500 team entry fees may simply be to high for many fishermen. Combine that with the costs of driving and lodging and one is looking at a sizeable sum of cash to participate. It seems to me that you may have priced out most of the Muskie fishermen. It seems that you are now left with a handful of die-hards and a few guides who either like the competition or the publicity that comes from doing well. Its just supply and demand. Increase the cost and the demand goes down. Decrease the cost and the demand goes up. So, if you want more participation, you may have to lower the entry fees. Just a thought. Herb

Posts: 32926 Location: Rhinelander, Wisconsin | The Hartman Series entry fee is $500.00. Decreasing the entry fee considerably from there causes a diminishing return because of the corresponding reduction in the payout. As an example, if we drop the entry fee to $350.00, the lodging, fuel and other costs remain constant. The payout goes from $30,000 for first place to $14,000, and the rest of the payouts down to 16th shrink accordingly. The question is are the anglers going to come in full field volume for 1/2 the payout for 2/3 to 3/4 the costs? We feel the incentive is there, but we need to adjust the schedule and locations to reflect the 'dream season' for the anglers who wish to compete.
