Hey Everyone,

Absolutely Priceless!!! The words that best describes the finish of the 2009 season for the #1 musky tournament circuit in the country, PMTT – Ranger Boats World Championship. Gary Lehnherr and his 7 year old son Carson were absolutely dialed in and completely untouchable during this event. While leading after the first day with a double, they went out and repeated with another double on day two, to out distance the other 46 teams by a long way. They caught four fish in all and not only will they carry the coveted title of 2009 PMTT World Champions, but they also won a brand new 2010 Ranger Boat 619 Fishermen, Rangertrail Trailer and Mercury powered Opti Max for first place valued at around $40,000.

As they trolled crank baits and spoon plugs off the deep breaklines and in the 18 to 22 foot range at about 4mph, they tried to keep the baits as close to bottom as possible even making contact with the bottom as they trolled. When a fish would hit, Carson reeled them in while his dad Gary handled the net. Keyes Outdoors TV Show captured the winning fish and all the excitement on film as they hooked up with the final fish while conducting an interview with them. Absolutely priceless watching this 7 year old crank in the fish and his dad putting the net under the $40,000 fish.

There were a total of 26 fish caught during the two day event, with a variety of techniques and presentations that worked. We will have complete details and results up shortly.

congrats to Gary and his son...I am pretty sure I see Gary out on the chain trolling a lot in the fall so he definitely knew what he was doing!

congrats and hats off to the Dad and his fish catching son. I did'nt intend to be negative with my 1st comment last night, just shocked that a 7 yr old could lead a group of pro's in a tourney.

Maybe not "Rocket Science", but it take a heck of a lot more skill to consistently catch muskies trolling, then it takes to cast a bucktail over a weed edge and reel it back to the boat.

Dad may have put them on the fish, but Carson still had to fight each on of them to the boat, keeping them down and not letting the jump, then being able to lift up their heads when his Dad is netting them, pretty impressive. He's caught over 100 muskies and he's only 7, he also catches salmon and other fish.

Don't be fooled by his age, that wasn't a 7 yr old leading a bunch of "tourny pros", that was an accomplished muskie fisherman and "tourney pro" himself leading a bunch of "tourney pros", who just happened to be 7yrs old.

As i have often stated, "Trolling is NOT rocket science!".

Maybe not, but you still have to catch them. And if everybody plays by the same rules then its an even game and skill and knowledge rises to the top.

I just wonder how many of you guys that have (had) a 7 yr olds would allow him/her reel in a $40K fish without going nuts and yelling your fool heads off??? I'm betting not too many.

Yes, they were already talking over locations with Mike Keyes after the event on Sunday. When they get all the details worked out, I'm sure Keyes Outdoors will let us all know.

I like a feel good story that puts life in perspective..."Absolutely priceless watching this 7 year old crank in the fish and his dad putting the net under the $40,000 fish"...values, attitude, relationships, life experiences and love for your children above all else.
Congratulations Carson on your college fund, may many more opportunities come your way!

Great story!
did i really just hear someone say trolling takes more skill than casting. That is a bit tough to swallow. Most of the trollers i see are guys that got bored walleye fishing and decided to cruiz around with musky baits in the water while listening to the twins game on the radio, just so they can still say they are fishing. trolling is the first way i learned how to fish for muskies. I do it rarely and only in the fall. Im sorry but sometimes it just doesn't seem like i am putting my effort into it if i am trolling. I know it is a good way to catch em, but i have seen way too many fish die as an end result of trolling.

Again good job to the team. good story

This is one of the best musky stories I have heard during my time chasing them. I bet he's a musky hunter for life. Wish more of us would take kids fishing. Congrats to the anglers.

Wow. That kid has a pretty cool dad.
I wish my dad would have did something that cool for me when I was 7. It gives me something to look forward to though now that my daughter just turned 1.

Jim,

Well said...It was almost emotional watching him raise that trophy. One of the best moments I had at any of the PMTT events. Trolling is not rocket science, but they put it together and won! Job well done!

Thanks to all the emails I received on top gun. Chris and I had a blast...It is greatly appreciated! See everyone in 2010.

LOL! You have stated this either so poorly, or so cleverly, no sane person would attempt to argue this.

The event was a great one. There were alot of fish caught and it was exciting to watch Gary and Carson win. Alot of great people fish the events and it's a great place to learn new techniques and meet some new friends.

The 2010 schedule is out, but not totally final. I look forward to next year and I hope the participation increases. I'm really excited for 2010 and I look forward to seeing everyone.

Congrat's to Gary and Carson on the win. Very big accomplishment at any age but for the father and son team of that age it is great to see people getting the youth involved. There must be or will be a great relationship between the 2 of them. I just think it is great and would have been great to see Carson's face after landing the 4th fish or getting the trophy. Great job Gary on getting your son involved into this sport and spending time together. Carson keep up the good work catching fish. Good luck fishing.
