Surprised a photo when public...cannot wait for the muskie police to voice an opinion about the use of a gaff....
If I'm not mistaken this isn't a fish from this year. I think I remember seeing this picture in the past? |

Location: Rhinelander, Wisconsin | I watched many anglers use a trip-gaff for years and used one several times very successfully. I still carry my Dick G trip gaff although with the new fish friendly nets the last few years, I don't use it anymore because for me it's more difficult. It swivels, has a locking 'trip' on the hook, and basically holds the fish in the water by the jaw with no harm done at all.

Location: Rhinelander, Wisconsin | I used mine alot years past when fishing alone to get larger pike unhooked safely and quickly on the Goon as one can, on a good day, catch over 20. I can honestly say I never hurt a fish using that thing. A well made trip gaff's a tool that when improperly used causes harm and properly used doesn't.

Location: Angola, IN | Let's get back to the #*^@ topic. Who caught this fish?? Anyone freakin know?? I saw this same pic in an old wrinkly magazine sitting on the #*#*ter somewhere in Canada in my cabin...which means I saw it at least 4 years ago, and the story was old then.
From the pic, it looks like a freak of nature. |

| that article is quite old. using a gaff is not something anyone should learn on their own. I have done it in the past, but it was shown to me properly by someone with 15-20 years experience in manipulating them, in fact if done right it's little damage at all to the fish. However mistakes with a gaff do not forgive. If you miss, you can seriously injure or kill the fish. Todays thick mesh nets are really terrific. even the craddle-net hybrids are enormous and have a combination of thick mesh and fin saving mesh on the bottoms. |

| oh but as for te fish. the head is absolutely GIANT! 55 inches plus with most likely a massive belly for a december fish in freezing waters. |

Not even close take out the 0 1/.
This was a December fish and probably a world record. I never saw a picture of it but rumours went away as fast as they apeared back then.
The head shot of that fish says it all, no trick photography there just a huge fish.
Now I wish I knew where to find that article and other pictures.
P.S. You may also notice that this gaff is specially made for C&R muskies. Extremely long and wide gap, I'm sure some still use them now and again. |

| I think that was a picture taken by someone else of the magazine.

| Story appeared in a french magazine called Sentier Chasse et Peche, October 1997 issue. 60 1/4'' caught in the Ottawa River by Jocelyn Lapointe December 8 1996.
Unfortunetly, the story is not anywhere online.
