| Did anyone else notice the Fish were on a tear last Sunday? I had the most exciting and then depressing day I've experienced yet. On the water at 4:00 am, wind out of the south. Fish #1- 6:00 am, Smoked the bait 6 feet from the boat! Played the fish on a couple runs and fish off! Fish #2- 7:30 am, second go around on the figure 8 fish on! Fish makes its first run and fish off! Fish #3- 8:20 am, fish hot behind the bait and takes it on the first turn fish on! No sooner than I set the hook it made a run and threw the bait! Fish # 4- 9:10 am, working the figure 8 and fish explodes on it from under the boat. Fought the fish for a short time and guess what? Fish Gone!! 9:15 am- Cloud cover says game over and sun beats down on the lake! When the sun came out I moved 2 more fish but spooked when they got near the boat. The winds were shifting to the North and the weather was cooling the next day. When the fish would take the bait they would bairly open there mouth and just grab the very back of the bait even though they chased aggressivly. I didn't do anything different than normal but they just kept coming off the #@ hook. It was so exciting but still hard to swallow loosing 4 nice fish. They were all mid 40" class fish. What's your record for loosing fish ? | |||

Posts: 2361 | It's a tough game when you are "beaking" bigger fish. I guess that is part of the beauty of double 10's, lots of gap in a 7/0 hook.

Posts: 929 Location: Rhinelander. | I agree with firstsixfeet(lol) Alot og gap is key on my hooks. As mentioned on another post I remove one of 3 hooks on many of my baits and use bigger ones with a wide gap. Big fish especially have a big ole thick jawbone and you want the hook to fit around it. Posts: 433 Location: Cedarburg, Wisconsin | When we were in Ontario at the start of Sept., I lost over half the fish that I had hit. I saw them hit a Suick at the boat by just nipping the tail, saw them hit an Eagle Tail in the middle boatside and never open the mouth over 1/2". I had four hooked trolling that fought to the boat and came off after a jump or touching the hull. The weather was all wrong, and I considered myself lucky just to get the hits. It was almost like they were ramming the lures, not trying to eat them. Heck, even the fish we caught were barely hooked and often came off in the net before I could even touch them, until the last day when the weather changed and they really hammered lures and even then we lost fish.
A few years ago at a club outing I had four hooked in one day and lost them all. One on a bucktail, one on a Globe, one on a Crane and one on a Suick. I even said when I had the last one on "At least this one is on a Suick, I never miss them on a Suick!" Ha ha ha.....
I've had it go the other way many times, where no matter how you had them hooked they all stayed on so it evens out.

Posts: 136 | Sunday had action right off the bat with a muskie swipe my spinner bait but missed on about my fourth cast out. Ten minutes later hooked a 34" pike out of the weeds, he tore my tail off my spinner bait, twisted the arm up pretty bad, fixed it up so it looked good, but no trailer hook on it due to damage. thought i would toss it out see if pulled straight and BAM as soon as I turned the crank a 45" muskie hits it, heck of a comotion but no hook up. pretty quite rest of the day though.

Posts: 131 | Story of my season. I've missed quite a few fish this year. Had some nice ones hooked just to get off.Even had a pig of a musky ,hooked twice in the same location , just to have him rocket out of the water , head shake and straighten out the hooks on my suick top water . That just adds to the sport

Posts: 96 | I'm normally good for a couple shake offs each season. This season I've had at least 20 come unbuttoned. Got sharp hooks, etc....just bad luck. At least the best time of the season is yet to come so maybe I'll get some revenge!

Posts: 4266 | I had a half hour from hell fishing on a lake with milfoil in it. One section is a huge horseshoe of milfoil that runs along the rim of an inside turn. There was a storm coming in, and the sky was a weird color that made the milfoil stand out and easy to see. I worked The Horseshoe for 45 minutes before I saw the first bolt of lightning. In that 45 minutes I hooked and lost 5 fish that pulled into the milfoil and got away and lost 5 others that I lost in the first 5 seconds of the strike. The first few ate Suicks, so I switched to a spinnerbait thinking less hooks and less chance of hanging up. Didn't matter what I threw. The only thing that I did catch was a butt-chewing from my daughter for being out in such dangerous weather. No fish, but I'll never forget it. Talk about a feeding window! I bet every big fish in the lake was eating during that same time period.
