Went fishing but not for ski's recently up in Canada. Had a good week, but it was tough to figure the fish out for a few days. But I did manage to catch a pretty nice 43" northern up in Canada this year that was a really pretty looking fish. Not the fifty I was shooting for, but it still was a really nice fish and better yet, I caught it on bass tackle on a senko, because I couldn't get the pike to hit anything big that day so I tried something different, and right off the bat, I got this beauty to bite. Too bad I only took one pack up there with me, they were gone pretty quickly. She had a pike as big or bigger come up to the boat with her, but my brother was nice enough to net mine and not try for the other since I had only fairly light line on it. There are no muskie in the lake that we go to, but that's okay, because I need one week a year where I can target fish that actually bite for a change, lol. My brother did have a chance to use his muskie skills though, when a nice laker charged in on a suzy sucker one day. He went into a figure eight and it followed it around several times before hitting it. Awesome sight to see. Now I can go back to being excited at one fish a day.....hopefully, lol.

Nice fish guys. Any Pike that size is way more fun than a musky if you ask me. That size of a laker will fight harder than any musky out there, that's for sure!

You are not kidding on the lakers, I caught one trolling an eagle tail a couple years back and it was a brutal fight. And it was just a bit smaller than my brothers, probably around the low teens I would guess. Had another fish on a muskie spinner bait my first year at the lake, and it took so much drag and bent my muskie rod over before I finally lost it. Had to be a really nice laker I figure. I know the guys who target them earlier in the year on the lake have journal reports of fish in the thirties, so it possibly was one of those monsters. Too bad their mouths are so bony, I have lost a few of them just because I couldn't get a good hook set into them. But still, when we do tangle, it is fun, even if they are small fish in the few pound range. We let them all go, even though some of our fellow fishing buddies wanted to eat them, I know that even the lakers that are in the teens are 20 year old fish. It takes a long time for them to get trophy sized and it is senseless to eat them at this point. Better to catch the whitefish and eat them during the week, which I think are the bomb with a little zatarain breading, and they are fun to catch too. The pike are just fun when they hit the mid thirties to low forties, but unfortunately we had a time getting many fish in the forty inch range this year. Weird weather and not a lot of wind kept the fish fairly innactive for the most part. We got numbers in the weeds downsizing and throwing suspending jerkbaits, but usually we can target the bigger fish throwing muskie lures. We caught some at the latter end of the week on muskie baits, but usually we can throw them all week. But it is hard to complain at catching a hundred of any fish species in a week, so I won't.

NIce fish. Lakers up there must fight a lot more than the lakers I catch in Lake Michigan because honest to god a laker of that size in Lake Michigan would not even take any drag on 20lb. line and would come in like a wet noodle!

I think a big northern mount looks nicer than a big musky mount, there's just something about the spots and the irredecent purple on there backs.

Both gorgeous! Yes, lake trout will hit beside the boat, right under your ice hole and on some sizes/types of baits that would surprise many. I gotta learn how to post pics here, we get them pushing 30#s every year and the markings are beautiful. I probably have 200-250 from ice out '09 alone. That pike is a hog. At an honest 43" it sure puts a lot of "50 inch" muskies into question.

Here's a good one my brother caught last weekend on Lac Seul. Nice purple tint to her and some sweet markings.
