Just wondering how often people replace drag washers in their reels. I have 2 reels (c3 and okuma induron) that i have to tighten the star so much i feel i'm going to strip out the threads to get it tight enough. I've cleaned them off and that helped for a while but i asume i need to get new washers. Any advice would be great. Thanks, Jim

Posts: 130 Location: Chicago | I usually will replace my drag washers only when they have just about gotten to where you're at now, I have used smooth drag washers and ss washers with very good results. I usually get a couple years out of them but, I don't get out as much as some other folks do. The people at smooth drags are great, real easy to talk to, items always seem to be in stock, prices are decent, and they ship to your door pretty fast (less than 5 days).Hope this helped Good luck!

I also strongly recommend Smooth Drag, but unfortunately they don't offer a kit for the Induron.

Posts: 723 | if you clean your own reels, take your drag washers out, whipe them down, then take some really fine sandpaper, maybe 400+ emery cloth, and gently scuff them up. emphasis on gentle cuz you can break them. just lay it flat on a table and work it over lightly. if you want your drag to bite, this will do it! dont know bout the induron, but I do it on all my old garcias and worx great, saving the $ on buying super smoothies or anything else. also, like said above, the spring washers maybe be over-sprung now, so you may want to replace those if it still doesnt work after scuffing them. after doing this to my reels, i havnt had to bottom out the drag to get the results I want. good luck

Location: Latitude 41.3016 Longitude 88.6160 | Send the washers to Dawn / SMOOTH DRAGS and she will match them up. I use the CARBONTEX washers in all my reels, also I use a lite coat of Cal's Drag Grease on them to make them very smooth on start up and it also water proofs the drag washers from water. Most sets will cost under $10.00 and will last the life of the reel, if U back off the drag when the reel is not in use. Also replace the metal drag washers in the handle about every 2-3 years they will weaken over time, replace them like () on the handle shaft.

Posts: 3864 | For the Abu only: If you've wrenched down as you described I would guess 1) the probelm started because you allowed oil into the drag washer system and 2) you've now flattened the two metal concave washers () that are part of the system. IMHO Smooothies are terrific, much better than original Abu parts, but they don't come with those two concave washers so you'll need to replace those, too. As mentioned above, every time you leave the water loosen up your drag system, tug out a few inches of line and then reel it back up. When you again hit the water, reset the drag on every reel.
