Fished in the Hayward area this wk end on a small clear water lake and the fishing was very slow. I really could not get anything going no matter what I tried. The weather was beautiful for beach goers, but not for musky fishing. Temps were in the 80's with bright sun and very little wind. Temps were about 20 degrees warmer than they should be for this time of yr. I've been skunked in conditions like this before so I'm wondering if anyone has any tips to try the next time I encounter this?
We tried big baits, small baits, fast baits, slow baits, bucktails, cranks, jerks and topwater, with no action. We fished shallow water, deep weedlines and suspended over the main lake basin. We fished early in the morning, mid-day and all afternoon til dark. The only thing I can think of that we didn't try was night fishing, but that was not really an option on this outing.
Any patterns that have worked for you in conditions like this?

Thanks,
Grass

Change lakes. They do not all shut down and turn on at the same time.

Go to a dark water lake, I been fishing close to the Hawyard area and been doing good. Mostly on darker flowages and rivers.

Usually on extended "hot periods" night fishing also heats up - too bad that wasn't an option for you.

First of all, you might be doing everything right already. There are times when the best of fisherman or guides experience a lock-jaw response. That's Musky fishing.

Thanks to everyone that posted!
I had a couple of rookies with me in the boat this wk end so I did not want to take them out in the dark, otherwise I would have for sure tried night fishing.
There is a good flowage in the area too so if it happens again next yr I'll try that instead.

When it gets hot I usually try:
- Go deeper than usual on the outside edge.
- Downsize and get into the weeds, rocks, and inside weedlines.
- Downsize and fish near the docks and even right up next to shore. Why Muskies sometimes go very shallow when it gets hot is beyond me, but they sometimes do.
- Try open water near clouds of bait fish. Sometimes the Muskies are not deep in te water column, but suspended over deep water. Bucktails and spinner baits often work when just casted over deep water.
- Speed up the retrieve as fast as one can.

Also, pack a good cooler full of food and water. One never wants to get dehydrated while fishing.
