Location: Lake Geneva, WI | I have a 1991 40hp mercury and it is not peeing water out as it should had has water coming out of the 1st cylinder. Has anyone had an issue like this with their merc. Could this be a bad gasket? Any thoughts would be great. Thanks |

Location: Elk River, Minnesota | I'm gonna take a chance on this and say you have a blown head gasket...if it's coming out the cylinder that is not a good sign. If you are lucky it may be just a bad waterjacket gasket and it is leaking by the first cylinder...
One way to tell if it is the head gasket is if compression is bad. Do a compression test on the cylinders and see what you find. If they are not within 5psi of each other, you have a bad head gasket/seal.

| There are no head gaskets on them motors, it is what is called a lost foam block. Where is the water coming from exactly?

Location: Lake Geneva, WI | Stacker, the water is coming out of the 1st cylinder spark plug hole. |

Location: Sun Prairie, WI | If it is like my 89, 75hp mariner there is no headgasket, however there is what looks like a head gasket but is a water jacket cover. Gasket could be bad around the sparkplug. I would try replacing the gasket for the waterjacket cover. |

| jj is right. how much water is there? is it like milky oil colored or clear water. if it is milky i will bet it is water in the fuel tank. if its clear it will be the o-ring on the spark plug hole.
LOST FOAM means that they built the heads right into the block. it was a cost efficient way to build a block and engine and works well. The iron is poured into a mold and when it sets up it melts away the foam, IE lost foam. |

| just fixed my brotherinlaws 40 merc same problem. It turned out to be the gaskets on the left hand side of the motor looking from the back.Just have to remove some linkage and side cover. its pretty easy did it in 40 minuets. there are also exhaust gaskets on other side that could be bad all the gaskets at halburg marine cost 35.00 |
