Can the cardiff 400 handle mag dawgs and double tens without tearing up the reel? I have to pick up a new reel this week and have never owned shimano baitcaster. Thanks.

Mine sure as heck didn't. I'm a Shimano guy and I had/have a Calcutta and wanted another rod and reel but was short on cash so I got a Cardiff....which last exactly one afternoon before the entire handle assembly failed and almost fell out of the side of the reel. Next day I took it back and did what I should've done originally and got another TE.

I did a search on here before I went to buy it and there seems to be alot of happy Cardiff owners out there, so I may have gotten a bad one, but I wasn't impressed. I should have followed my instincts and when I saw "Made in Malasia" on the foot put it down and ran away. I rolled the dice and for me, it sucked.

My Calcuttas have been great so far with heavy use. But they're proper Japanese-made Shimanos, which are a whole different ball game.

Wow, what would you get in that price range( little over $100)? I know there have been threads about this, but can't find a good answer.

I know there's alot of Abu's in that range. I think the Cardiff could handle retrieving plastics, but I killed mine after a day of fast bucktails.

I have a couple Pflueger Trion 66 round reels that have gotten a lot of use and still are working like they did new. I put an Abu power handle on them and they work great. I believe they are around $100. Hope this helps.

Hey Matt-
I recommend Shimano Torium 14 for big blades and not a lot of ching.
I have beat the p155 out of mine this year and it's still pullin'... fast.

Shimano's service department is awesome if your reel breaks or needs cleaning/lube.

I actually love mine, my favorite reel and I have a few 700 calcutta's, saltist, caiman, 6600ext, something else, and two more I think. I have had a few problems with it also though. First, I put a power handle from a 400 calcutta and ripped it off in about an hour (stripped the handle threads), so that trip I used twisty ties to hold it on. Still worked fine and was the most used rod for last years MF vermillion trip. Fast forward to this years MF Vermillion trip. Finished ripping the handle off again after using thread locker and is tied on right now and completely smooth;) I also had the entire gearing/handle pop out twice while fishing, but it was because the handle stopped the free spool in mid cast with pounder size lures (not good). Not fun to fix while floating in the boat, but did it with little trouble. So yes, it can handle the stuff, just watch casting and the handle. You get what you pay for, but it is still my favorite reel. It does need to get greased up now and the handle welded on
