| I recently purchased some custom painted lures from Stan Durst and also had him paint some of my own lures for me. Unfortunately, I injured my leg and won't be able to fish until an operation on my knee heals. Can't wait to try them out (it will be a couple of weeks). I've seen his products mentioned, but never seen any feedback about whether these lures catch fish or whether they catch fish any better than store-bought lures? |

| After years of painting my own lures, I've decided, that color and where that color is located is what makes or breaks a lure. Store bought lures have the eyes on top of the lure. I make the eyes BIG and on the side or even 4 eyes side and bottem. Orange or white belly, with yellow and black, or what ever is your most trusted color, in vertical stripes, on the sides, work best for me.[:sun:] |

| Wow; this is a new twist that makes a lot of sense to me. Surprised theres so little feedback on this post (so far.) I would think that the Musky guys (like me) that have a heck of a lot of lures would be very opinionated on this topic. Hopefully I'll get some more feedback on this one. Thanks for your post. Tom |

| I've lost a couple of fish this year on my new custom baits and had a few other follows too! I think that a custom bait might give me a slight edge on a high pressure lake ? They just aren't used to seeing something like that so the try to eat it ! I'm thinking about getting one of his fools gold patterns . I belive it turns from red to gold ? anyone ever try that one ? Let me know what you think if you have .

| I think you hit it right on the head Ferd. I don't know if it's the color that is making the difference, but that it is a color the fish aren't accustomed to seeing. The last couple weeks I have been using a lure that I didn't think the fish would ever want to eat. To me the color just isn't the "norm" for the lake I am fishing. But you know what, I've gotten 6 fish and lost 7 others in two weeks on the same bait!
I have heard thet Joe Bucher will go to stores and buy the color that has the most on the shelf because nobody else is using that color. Makes sense to me. But lets step back a second here. Why is it that the black bucktail still produces so many fish? Is it because it gets used the most?
Should we all be throwing the ugliest lure in our box? After my wife told me to 3 weeks ago to "Put that ugly lure on", I say we do. Once again it's something different. I would like to know what JLong thinks about this. Great topic I think. |

| I've heard it said that none of the baits we musky nuts toss to ol' esox really remind her of anything she recognizes as normal food. That most strikes are more a case of trying to kill it rather than eat it. Don't know if that's 100% true, but also don't know that it's not true either. But if it is, then perhaps color could indeed make a difference...can just imagine her thinking when seeing a bait she's seen a thousand times before...no need to exert myself to kill that one, it's just one of the many which inhabit this watery home of mine. But toss something she hasn't seen before and it might go more like...What the he!! is THAT?! I sure don't need any of those things (whatever the *@$<> they are) taking up residence here - i'd better just kill the dumb thing...SMACK!!....[;)] |
