Location: WV | What size do you use if you don't do the wire through, .072 or larger? Length? |

Location: KY | I use both 0.07 or 0.09 depending on the application and wood. They are both plenty strong if balanced with the right hooks and tackle. I try to use the longest screw I can for the line tie as it takes the lion’s share of the abuse. On the belly hooks you can get away with a shorter screw because of the angle of pull. I always turn the eye so that the “hooked” end faces forward, and use epoxy when installing. Think about how many times jointed baits cycle back and forth when trolled for an hour. The line tie and joints are going to loosen up if they are not sealed tight from water, and rot, with epoxy. I have never experienced a failure. People talk about components being strong enough for any fish. I always build my lures to stand up to abuse like snags when trolling, fish rolling in the net, and years of exposure to water. |
