Subject: Question about Saltist reel?

Hello I just have to say this site is awesome for rookies like myself. Well I have bought a Saltist 30 levelwind and have a few questions. The reel is very smooth and strong but it seems like mine has an awful lot of play in the handle. If you grab the star drag and handle you can push it back and forth about a 1/32 of an inch. I did not know if this is normal or I could do something to tighten the wobble. Is this problem worth sending back for repair or replacement. Like I say I am totally new to muskie and have never even caught one. I will say it pulls a DC-10 a heck of a lot easier than my Abu Record. Well thanks for any advice or suggestions in advance and actually could use any advice from reels to tackle selection.

Mine does the same thing. It did it right out of the box. I talked to a couple other guys about it and they said the same, so far it works well!!

Thank you sir you have relieved alot of my worries. I really can't notice the wobble unless I am burning or casting a sinker the yard for target practice. I have read about the Saltist being hard to dial in to avoid the backlashes but I have not had a serious problem with that. I did originally have it on a St. Croix x-heavy 6'9'' rod and it backlashes like crazy because the three ounce sinker just could not load the rod. When the Okuma EVX x-heavy 8'6'' came I honestly haven't had a single backlash other than a little overun that easily pulled out in a second. I have since put the Abu Record back on the St. Croix and figure I will use it for a jerk rod and crank rod. The Saltist and Okuma will be for blades and larger tackle. Well at least that is what I am thing but who knows. I am thinking of getting one more rod and reel setup but am really stumped. I am up in the air between a Penn 965 and the Abu Garcia 6500 Mag Elite. I am a horrible caster and would like to see if the magnetic brakes work so I am leaning towards the Abu Mag elite. But then I have heard bad things about the Penn and was thinking about the Luna 300 from Daiwa. As for the rod I have it down to three choices. Another Okuma EVX probably the 9'3''. The second is an St.Croix 8' rod at a local store for 150 but it is american made I just don't remember the model. The third would be the new Muskie Armor rods. On second thought I think I will go walk the road ditches looking for beer cans first I think LOL!! Thanks for the help and suggestions.

If your casting that Saltist with just a sinker on it in the backyard and not backlashing the next cast, your doing very well with it thats for sure.

I think the next rod I buy will be one of Hulberts 9 fters. I've heard good things from people who have tried them and thought they were the cats meow! I have a 9 ft. Thorne Bros. thats pretty tough to beat but Still thinking on giving the Musky Armor a try!
