was using echo chain saw oil for premix in my 45 hp mariner and now it won't get up on plane. just kinda boggs down but when i checked it at home with the muffs it ran good. only burned about 3 gallons in it , was this a major mistake? one guy said only use tcw-3 for outboards, is this right? thanks again..karol

Not sure what the differences are but there are oils for 2 stroke air cooled and 2 stroke water cooled. I would imagine the oil for the chainsaw was air cooled. May or may not have led to your problem. I would look at the oil can you were using and see what the applications are.

Yes the guy was right. TCW-3 oil is of a higher grade (ashless) and for premix of 50:1 or 100:1. Chainsaw oil is for weed wackers and the like at 25:1 or 35:1. Change the plugs, maybe run some carb and combustion chamber cleaner through it and you should be good to go unless something went really wrong. Do cheap out on oil its the life blood of your motor. Personally I run nothing but Amsoil in my motors.

Good Luck
Tim

jjmuskie is right about the air cool vs. water cooled. Water cooled follow TCW-3 specs while air cooled follow API-TC specs. A TCW-3 spec calls for non-metal additives and ashless. Major emphesis on ashless. Air cooled have higher ash content and doesn't take long to affect your outboard. I made a mistake of grabbing the wrong oil off the shelf, long story, that was for my kids air cooled 2-stroke atv and added it to my outboard. Didn't take long before it developed a hesitation on take off and kind of a slight miss at idle. Sucked out the oil and grabbed the right stuff and it cleared right up. Running an oil with ash in it for a long period will cause problems and difficult to return to normal. I only ran mine for maybe 15 minutes before I realized I had the wrong stuff. And like Tim I run Amsoil. It's cheaper than Merc brand and good oil.

Hope this helps...

Amsoil saber outboard is the way to go with premix 2 cycle. Mix it 100:1 as recommended and you will not regret it. My 99 Johnson does not smoke at all unless it is 35 degrees.
