Any reports of folks having a tough time paying bills this year are certainly no big surprise anymore. The only thing I can think of that might put a positive spin on this for me is that maybe FLW will get Mercury to take the place of Evinrude if they can't settle their differences. I have a Merc on my Ranger and it would be nice to have a chance at some of the motor money if they made that switch. Interestly, my particular Ranger dealer will sell nothing but a black motor even though Ranger has had their horse tied up in front of the Evinrude and Yamaha shops for some time now. Also, as bad as it sounds for the folks in Fond du Lac, if the company opts for the non-union crowd down South, the end result might be making it a far more competitive company. Marty Forman

I pray they keep jobs in FDL Wisconsin.  When business was good, no one gave the credit to the union workers.  Perhaps it's the failed American economy and our dependence on foreign oil that put us into this mess.  I know I had much more expendable income prior to 2000 when gas prices weren't astronomical.

They're using the recession as a convenient excuse to move out of FDL.  Unions will always take the blame, but is it really the unions fault that:

My new crestliner in '05 went for $16,500 with a 90hp. That same boat with a 115hp is now on sale for $26k.

Price escalation is ridiculous and is certainly a contributing factor.

The unions get the wages up and unfortunately push the jobs out. I have friends in 2 car plants one union ,one not. The union guy makes 35 percent more for exact same job. The car company agreed to the pay. GM and toyota plant and guess who pays less

I would rather pay more for a union worker making a higher wage so he can in turn have more to spend in his/her community. If they are making more they can spend more for cars, boats, college, vacations, etc., which are the things that sustain the local economies. Live better and help your local economy live better...union. My two cents.

I'd rather be non-union and have a job than union and jobless. Unions are great if the companies are successful enough to pay their (the unions) wages, and right now not too many are. We all have to tighten our belts and that includes unions.

Just for the record, there is no anti-union sentiment being pushed here. I'm just thinking that if the company looks at the option of producing units in two American cities and the labor cost is significantly less in a Southern, more business friendly state---they are likely to opt for the lower cost. When we as a nation began to buy into the "Always lower price" sonata that the Wal-mart piano player was singing, we sank a harpoon deep into the heart of anybody with a blue collar having too good a future. It's just the way it is. If they thought you'd pay a higer price for a Verado if the plant was in Fond du Lac than if it were in Oklahoma (or whereever it is) then they would build it here. Unfortunately, their research says you want to pay less. Personally, as a guy who earns his living in the Wisconsin metal working industry, I am going to suffer too if they move--and I'll be sad about it as well--it just won't make a difference. The south is really not the answer. The south does not fund education and is years behind the North in terms of educated people. No offense to anyone but that is a fact.

Honda was considering building a massive plant in Mississippi a few years ago. They did a study and found out it would actually be cheaper to pay union workers in the northern part of the United States or Canada as the employees were much more educated and a lot better workers. They declined on building in Mississippi because they said the training costs involved to teach people in the south would be astronomical.

Unfortunately they ended up building the plant in Canada. I think that says something about the south. Just look how Toyota quality has gone down since they started building vehicles in the south. I mean there still good but their quality control has slipped substantially.

Look it up if you don't believe me. Unions protect workers. Not all of them are bad.

No prob Marty, I actually didn't think you were, but something touched a nerve and I wanted to express my concern that unions only get blamed when things go wrong, but when things go well they don't get any kudos.

I dont know why Obama doesn't ride in on his high horse and just take Mercury away from it's owners and give it to the unions. It worked great for GM.

Let's not forget that the article quoted only Irwin Jacob's side of the story. Let's also not forget that Irwin's companies are in bankruptcy...its all posturing and brought to us by the guy who has not shown too many scruples in the past....
