I just received the Saltist LW20HA I ordered on Sunday from Shark River Mail Order. I did a size comparision between a 6500 TCM and the Saltist LW20HA. They are very close in size with the main difference being the drive shaft on the Saltist sticks out of the right side plate further than the 6500 because of the gear box design on the Saltist. I prefer smaller reels and don't use my 6500's anymore and have switched to Curado's.

curious why you didn't order the 30HS? It has the wider spool so not so much line goes out w/ each cast. Same size face plates just a wider spool.

I didn't want the wider reel. I should have no problem getting the casting distance I want with the 20. I may be giving up a little to the 30, but all day comfort is what I'm looking for. I do just fine with my Curado's and they have even smaller spools.

The 30 will have a higher retrieve ratio 0f feet per revolution over the length of a retrieve, and particularly starting the retrieve on a long cast. It will be winding the same amount of line on to a bigger diameter base than the 20, thus picking it up faster. Something to think about.

Give us a review on how that sucker works. Just the right size. The 30 would be perfect. If it casts as good as a Revo toro or Induron would be great. Wish I could get a handle that big for a Toro.

I just saw that you put the Abu power handle on it. Does the Diawa power handle fit on the Abu. If so ,putting a diawa power on a Revo Toro would be all I'd need.

Everyone has their idea of the perfect set up for a particular type of bait. For me the 20 is ideal in physical size and will do everything I want it to do based on my style of fishing.

I haven't been on the water yet, but I did a fair amount of casting in my yard (Over 5 acres) with various weights and I know it will cast a long ways and without any backlash issues. I have a little "Sled" that I made out of a piece of scrap plywood and 2x2's that I use to put tension on my line when I fill a reel so my backing and braid are tight on the spool. I normally don't add much weight because when you pull a piece of plywood over 3.5 to 4" dry grass there is a fair amount of resistance especially with the stretch of the mono backing. When I tried this with the Saltist, there was basically no resistance once I got into the braid. I placed about a pound of weight at the rear of the sled and tried again. This time there was a fair amount of Resistance but I had no trouble "Burning" the sled to me. It's amazing how big a difference the oversize gears on my "BABY" Saltist make compared to reels that have what I would call standard size gears like the ABU 6500's. I realize this is a Redneck way of doing things, but it proved what everyone else that owns a Saltist has been saying.

I like the way the 20 feels so much, I am ordering another one.

Thanks for this post. The photos are really helpful. I just pulled the trigger and ordered the saltist LW30. (I wouldn't say I prefer a larger reel, but I don't mind it so much) As far as the amount of line a 30 will pick up per crank compared to the 20, yes it will be a little less on the 20 due to the spool size, but I don't think it is that big of a deal (especially not worth sacrificing the overall comfort of the reel in hand for an extra inch or two (if that) of pick up.

....and hey, don't apologize for any redneck ways. Nothing wrong with a little hillbilly blood in your veins. My body is in the north, but my heart grew up further south...stomach is in New Orleans...thirst is somewhere in the Caribbean....... and I left my lungs somewhere in Amsterdam

Yes the Daiwa handle fits and the threads are the same. Daiwa uses a different style of nut setup though.

If you don't like the Daiwa handle I'll trade you something for it. I've hand a string of hand surgeries and the more the handle resembles a door knob the better I like it.

For those that are looking at a 30, here are a couple of pics I hijacked from a saltwater site.
