| Today I just bought my first boat, nothing fancy but it will finally get me on the water. I live in Illinois and was wondering what steps I need to take to get the title transferred over for the IDNR to make me legal, pay the taxes on it, and all that good stuff. I keep trying to call the DNR phone number, but I keep getting a busy signal. I bought it off a private seller. Thanks. |

| It's probably a good idea to check what your state requirements are before buying a boat/trailer/motor. Also, make sure you get the correct information. I made a mistake in checking with the local license bureau in Missouri about buying a boat from a Missouri resident that acquired it from buying a house from a deceased owner's estate. The boat had been left there. When I went to the same clertk to register the boat, she acted like I didn't have the proper papers, which were what she told me I needed (even notarized). Luckily, I was able to get out of the deal and got my money back.
Anyway, it would be best to check with the state and perhaps a local marine dealership, who probably knows more. |

Location: N.FIB | you need a bill of sale because you are gonna get charged sales tax,if you don`t have one make one up and I wouldn`t say you paid alot for it either.I would just go to a title transfer place and have them do all the work for you but bring your check book,you`ll need to write them a few seperate checks plus there fee and that shouldn`t be much but 15 bucks. |

| Is the IDNR boat title transfer always hard to get a hold of? I've tried for two days to get a hold of them, but I keep getting a message saying they're busy. If I knew where to go I'd just drive to Springfield and get it done since it's only 30 minutes away. |

Location: N.FIB | all you have to do is go down to the dmv,but who wants to wait in those lines.Thats why I would suggest a place that charges a small fee so it`s alot eaiser and less hastle,any place that does plate tranfers can do it. |

| Register it in WI, save yourself a couple thousand dollars. You can live in IL and register it in WI. The difference in cost for my boat was about 2000. |
