Posts: 295 Location: Southern Ontario, Detroit River and Lake StClair | Headed out out of the Ruscom on Lake StClair yesterdays morning with my sons Roughneck Jr. and Littlest Roughneck along with my buddy Matt. We decided to hit the lake this time in search of Littlest Roughneck's (Josh) first legal fish. Josh is 13 and been fishing muskie seriously for 3 yrs but always seemed to come up a little short when it came to long fish. He's caught a pile just never any really long ones. Today we figured go with trolling for a change instead of our usual casting program. We fished 16-18FOW just a little east of where we launched. There was plenty of bait on the screen and it looked like the making of a good day. It didn't take long before we started to hear guys on the radio wondering what was going on........ There were 5 or 6 boats working the area we had started and after not hearing much or seeing anyone with any action we moved deeper. It didn't take long before we heard that "zzzzzing" we had been wanting. I turned around and grab the dow rigger rod and set the hook hard....twice and handed if over to Josh. The fish deffiantly wanted no part of coming to the boat. If fought hard and stayed deep. Josh worked the fish perfect and finally got him to come up and to the boat. His brother handled the net while myself and Matt watched everything from the sidelines. Jr. (Zach) slipped the net under a thin but pretty 46" fish the first time it came in and held it at the side of the boat. The fish still wasn't into having anything to do with the us as it thrashed in the net spraying all 4 of us with water. A measurement and a couple of quick pics and we slipped her back into the water. It came on a black with silver blades UltraMag StClair Hound run 14ft down on the downrigger in 17 FOW. With our mission for the day over it didnt take long before the 95 degree heat, lack of wind and a zillion little bugs for us to call it a day and head home. To cap the day off we stopped in 8 FOW around some shallow weeds to make a few casts and about 6 casts in I had a spunky fish in the low 30"s coming charging in on a Cisco coloured Musky Innovations TwinFin only to miss it and disappear. We'll be out again next weekend but probably back to our casting program. I've spent a crazy amount of time trolling the lake over the years but the whole casting thing has got me know. He's a pic of Josh's fish.......congradulations on your first legal fish buddy, next step is 50" ![]() Good Fishin' Tim Edited by Roughneck1860 8/16/2009 5:56 PM Attachments ---------------- ![]() | ||
