This morning I went out for about the 12th time this year. Again no fish and didn't even see one. Some of my outings have been with my 3 year old (so I don't get to fish like I want to) But I still get to cast for a hour or two. At this point I would be happy to catch a northern. This is getting pathetic. 12 times out I have had 1 missed (big one too) 3 follows and 3 small pike. This is by far the worst run in my life. Small bucktails / Double 10's / mag dawgs /reg dawgs/ med to small glides and jerks / small cranks/ top water. I have given all of these their fair shot. I figure-eight 97% of the time. I try to go out during major feeding windows and I fish fairly good water. Yesterday, when I got skunked, some guy at the landing was telling me how a musky snapped off his line. He was fishing for bluegills with nightcrawlers. This was the height of my frustrating. Anyone else having a crappy year?

I have been guilty of having these thoughts creep into my mind, and I just keep telling myself that there are people 1/2 way across the world sitting in a sand box getting shot at. Thinking of that, puts everthing into perspective.

Not to get all preachy, but don't forget that you are able to get out to do something you (hopefully) like to do with your son.

Ive been skunked to so far, but havent fished yet! at least you have been out, my first time of the year i wait until my annual LOW trip and then go from there, I let the people start getting opener out of their systems and school goes back in session, then I start my season.

This year has actually been pretty good, but the bite has been "different" than what I have seen in past years.

Bucktails have not produced this year so far. Slower moving baits with more of an erratic motion have gotten the nod. Fish seem much more interested in gliders, suicks, dawgs, and tubes. Slow down your presentation a bit and work the edges, or even off of the breaks a bit.

The fish are still there, just keep at it and you will be rewarded soon. Good Luck!

Yes, my boat hasn't been in the water yet and i haven't made a cast yet at the toothy critters. Soon!
Best part of the muskie season is still ahead anyway. It'll turn around.
Good Luck.

I had the same problem but I was seeing fish, they just weren't attacking the bait. Strap on a Double Girl and keep throwing it, the results will start to happen.

You've been out 12 times? I've been out twice. Stop complaining and enjoy your time on the water.

If I was guaranteed to never catch a fish again in my life I would still go fishing. Enjoy some quality time with the little one and leave frustartion for work.

I've been having the best year so far either. I've not gotten out nearly as much as I would like... for musky, I've not even so much as had one on my line yet. I did manage a couple of follows thus far... but that's about the extent of what I have to share.

Regardless, time on the water musky fishing is way better than any day sitting at work.

Didn't catch one last year, doesn't look any better for this year ....... I miss the old days, fishing EVERY weekend, rain, shine, snow, nothing used to stop me. I've lost the fire.

Ugh, lost an upper 40's last night, making it 0 for 7 to start the MN musky season. What is it going to take?!? I'm moving fish, I'm hooking fish, I'm just not boating fish! Alright, I'm done whining.

The warmup perios i have founf is extremely weather dependant. It seems like we have had a ton of cold fronts this year on the weekends. The years when the weather lines up when I fish I do really well. The other thing is fishing the hotter bites. Some lakes have better years then others or even several years.

You should all be thankful. I haven't even been out on the water yet this year because I don't have a boat anymore!

I think I know what you are saying T bone. Never mentioned not being thankful, but just saying you've been having a tough year.

This has been by far my hardest year yet. I caught a 41 opening day and then a 30 ish the next trip out. After that, not much to talk about. I moved to an area that should have better fishing than where I had been living, but it isn't shaping up that way yet. Every time I go home I've had action. Not caught any, but lost two and had some follows.

What does that tell me? It's been a tough year, and I can manage to scratch fish at home because I know the spot on the spot every where I go. On the new lakes, I'm fishing generalities, and it hasn't been enough to get action.

Try something new that you've never done before, or don't do often. I went for a long streak in the Hayward area with not seeing ANY FISH - I mean none, not a one. We had about 2 days of consistent weather, I found a bunch of tiny perch suspended, and had a fish make an attempt at eating a Pounder over 35 feet of open water. That's a technique I have given very little time to in the past.

Just stick to it, try the old standby techniques as well as some new stuff, and be positive. I think the weather has made it boom or bust for some people. Once we get a little farther into summer it will settle down and fish will start to show themselves.

And like the others said - keep it fun or it isn't worth going.
