Location: WI | Townsend bill would eliminate boat sales taxreporter - june 30State Rep. John Townsend, R-Fond du Lac, plans to introduce a bill designed to stimulate sales of motorboats — a yearlong moratorium on state sales tax on up to $30,000 of purchases. “The first practical outboard motor was invented in Wisconsin,” Townsend said. “Wisconsin is still the only state where outboard motors are produced. There’s Mercury Marine in Fond du Lac, of course, and there is also the Evinrude plant in Sturtevant, by Racine. This bill would eliminate a significant barrier to motorboat ownership for the next year.”

I wasn't going to say anything, but I think you hit it right on the head. I'm definitely not going to hold my breath... but it would be a great boost to local sportsmen and boaters.

Posts: 929 Location: Rhinelander. | And it looks like mercury may be done in Fond du lac. Talk of the plant going to stillwater to merge with one there allready. It would be cheaper labor there as I understand its nonunion, What a loss to fond du lac.. Not a done seal yet but from word I hear from people working at the plant it does not look good.

Posts: 1220 | No, I don't agree. I think with Doyle's crappola record for keeping industry in the state and the recent big Briggs and Stratton closures, the threat of losing Merc up in Fond du Lac just might be enough to get this passed. In fact, it just might push me over the edge in wanting to have one of Ranger's newly redesigned Fisherman series boats. Marty Forman

What do you think will happen to those real estate markets now in those two small communities? If the Mercury plant closes you have to start wondering what industries associated with this state will even be left. What's next? Harley? Quad? Kevin Edited by MuskyHopeful 7/3/2009 8:45 AM

Posts: 272 | We should have Townsend talk to the dorks that are looking to up the boat registration fee, again, and charge out of staters a fee to launch in WI waters. Just had an increase in '07 I believe. I'm sure that will go over well in the Land of Lincoln. Not to hijack your thread, Shane. I just thought it was funny to see what each respective side of the political aisle are offering in a slumping economy. Discounts....or fee hikes forever and ever, hmmm, lemme see.....
