I have just purchased a very inexpencive boat motor and trailer combo yesterday, It was very, dirty and had some serious dark brown algae stain on the side and transom.. While cleaning it off I noticed many tiny holes in the transom above the waterline . Upon close examination It looked like tiny pimples on the painted aluminum transom. I actually was able to take a finishing nail and with very little pressure push it threw the aluminum outside shell the transom wood seemed solid but the Aluminum looked to be rusting from the inside out.? I never seen anything like this before, I went over the Entire boat and this was only happening on the transom area. Almost looks like the boat was hit with buckshot......Any Ideas will be helpfull Mike

How recently did you replace the transom??? And if you did replace it, what did you replace the old transom with???

Only thing I can think of is that you had the transom replaced with pressure-treated plywood... which is a big NO-NO since the chemicals inside the treated plywood reacts badly with aluminum, causing corrosion...

Hiya,

I think what rebel is saying is a good thing to check. If that is the case, I'd maybe be looking to talk to the original owner and ask him/her about a transom replacement and what they used, if in fact they did have a rebuild done. My only other thought would be that somehow they had it in salt water and did not have any zinc diode on the rig...

My gut says that if you could push a finishing nail through it, it's not seaworthy...its an accident waiting to happen. How long ago did you purchase the rig?

I just purchased it three days ago, The spots that look like a they are raised are about the size of a finishing nail, the aluminum is the only thing affected as the Wood is solid with no signs of being soft. The only damage seems to be in the stern only, the bow and the rest of the boat are Mint.....I was wondering if it took on water while tied to a dock and leaked batter acid or something? Weird for sure....
