With everyone watching their pennies nowdays and the price of baits ever increasing, what Lures do you think are the best value in muskie fishing? I'm not talking cheapest baits, rather what are the baits that work and have a good price.

I think about this a little differently, looking at what the lure does for me on the water. If the bait costs $35, but puts muskies in the Frabill regularly, it's a great value.

To answer the original question, I'd say, no doubt the Storm Kickin' Minnows seem to tag a lot of fish for a bait around $8 or less, although I haven't been lucky to have one grace my net on one...Others that come to mind:
- Mepps marabous
- Rizzo Tails
- Bomber Long A's

And also, haven't nailed any yet on one but the new Super D's have some great color patterns and are very competitively priced IMHO.

I agree with Steve, putting fish in the boat is key. I would watch the buy/sell forum. I bought a ton of new or used baits this offseason. I don't think I paid full price for any of them. I got a ton of suicks and other lures for cheap. I got a ton of lures for cheap with Roberts outdoors, and the swap meet in Feb. If your patient and look around there are deals to be had!

Quite a few good ones out there that I consider a good value.
Super D's: They catch fish, are very reasonably priced, and hold up well. The new ones should be even tougher, making them a better value than they were before.

Shack Attack products (Curly Sue, Suzy Sucker, etc): They cost a little more than the Super D's, but are built like tanks! You'll get your money's worth out of these baits for sure!

Mojo products: I've only used the Weagle, but talk about a bait that catches fish! Very tough too. This one will catch a lot of fish and never fall apart. At worst, you might need to repaint it after A LOT of fish.

Mepps Musky Marabous: Inexpensive and catch fish. Actually pretty durable.

Rad Dog spinnerbaits: Inexpensive also and built tough. Catch lots of fish.

Sennett Tackle products: Put together in Ty Sennetts basement. They hold up well and catch fish. Not the cheapest baits, but certainly not the most expensive.

I'm sure there are lots more, but these are the baits I have the most experience with that I would consider a good value. I bought some more over the winter that seem like they will be good value baits, but I haven't used them yet to test them out. The Slammer crankbaits/minnows seem like they will be really good though. Through wire construction, made of plastic, great looking finish, and a decent price.

Inhaler bucktails are fairly inexpensive and have worked well for me. Suicks, Smity baits, and Mepps are all affordable options as well.

I have yet to throw away a Suick and I bet in my next 30+ years I will never throw away a Suick. Dare Devils have done well in my box for years and years too. If a bait cost $30 or more I cringe a little but if I know it will be in my box for 20-40 years, well....its a good buy. For some of the others I look at the cost vs quality. If a bait cost you $5 but falls a part in one trip and you could have gotten a bait for $10 that would hold up for 3-6 trips then go with the $10, otherwise if they are both "disposable" 1-3 fish baits then buy up those $5 baits! Hard to know on a lot of lures but you can always ask here. You will always get a good hard honest answer

Figure 8 big mamas in discntinued colors for $12

Seriously, these things are built as well if not better than alot of DCG type tails.
Big fish have eaten them in mine, and a few friends boats the last few years.
Price/quality, I really dont think you can find a better deal right now.

Northland makes the bionic bucktail and bionic bucktail spinnerbait. They are pretty good values for the money. try going to a musky specialty shop and they will set you up with some lures in your price range that catch fish.

Savage Gear Deviator..pretty inexpensive, very good quality glide bait. I bought a 5 1/2" one as a hybrid for pike and muskies, it works beautifuly, think it was like $11.99 maybe? Also, if your looking for a good "plop plop" lure for a good price, try the Holcombe Stomper, sounds really good much like the Chopper or the Pacemaker but at a little bit better price.

No lure is worth it's cost if it doesn't catch fish.
If you want to see what works, you can go to the Jackson Lures Unlimited site and click on the button for "Ten Top Lures" for producing 50" fish. I'm sure this data is from Muskies, Inc.
Among the ones listed that don't cost an arm and a leg are: Jake, Believer, Mepps (I presume in line spinners), Top Raider, Grandma, Bulldog. They all work--along with the others listed--in the right time and place. Check out the costs for yourself; and make your choices.

Super D's I think are the one of the best valued baits and they catch fish. They are also more durable then a bulldawg giving it another plus.

I'd check out the Slammer line of crankbaits- I find them affordable at Sportsmans Warehouse, and they are a very versatile bait- trolling, cast and retrieve, twitching.

I 2nd the Rapala Super Shad Rap. I often find them for under $10.00. It can be cranked, twitched, slow retrieve on top and trolled. It has accounted for half of all the fish in my boat.

Rapala X Rap, they cost $12 maximum and so far this season has put about 2/3 of our total fish in the net. They are also great lures for other species. I have caught a ton of pike on them and my PB walleye.

Musky Buster topwaters are worth 5 times what they sell for - The time and effort they put into them is amazing.

I'd have to say Top Raiders. Moderately priced, built tough to last, and catched fish.

Another big vote for anything and everything Tackle Industries.
http://www.tackleindustries.com

I think I own between 70 and 80 of their lures. Once the new SuperDs, MegaDs and MiniDs come out I will own over 100 easy! Don't hear much about their topwaters but these are some of the best quality built topwaters I have ever owned and as stated above for far less than most other brands. Love the real gold plated terminal tackle on them. These guys ships fast too. Had my order in under three days plus I have gotten a few free lures from them too with my orders in the last 6 months.

Talking about value in baits, here is a twist we all need to ponder.

The musky bait industrie is full of small American based makers. These people make baits becouse they love to. They love musky fishing, and are trying to make life easier by providing musky addicts with quality products. These baits may cost more than a bait made in communist china, but, that money is staying right here in America, helping red blooded, apple pie Americans. Big deal, you save 10 bucks on a double 10, or 6-8 on a chunk of rubber.
In this place and time BUY AMERICAN!

I hope the people who need to read this and understood.

tndoug, that is worth repeating. I buy stuff from all over, but I usually try and seek out the US made products. I think with the growing popularity of musky fishing it will unfortunatly become more common to see foreign made products.

All lures are repairable, or won't need to be junked if you learn how to keep them in playing shape by keeping the clear coat, paint job and lure integrity in tact. Epoxy, nail polish and other sealers on cracks will add years to any lure. I think of all muskie lures as investments. Like Steve said, I'll pay good money for lures that put fish in the boat. If the get damaged, I keep them in playing shape by repairing them quickly.
