This past weekend I had two follows on hell hounds. (first time I'd ever used them)
After the first one jumped like a dolphin out of the water after it without
a figure 8.... AGAIN I was reminded on how important the figure 8 was- DUH!
I was debating on how to do a figure 8 with those...

Do you guys just rip them around like a bucktail or do you jerk or work them around in a 8?
I should of learned another thing from that fish too- speed up your lure as it gets closer! the next follow the fish was 2" behind the lure and I didn't speed it up so he got within sight and I attempted to start the figure 8 and he spooked.

This was the first time for me to really use jerks and after talking to another muskie guy last night- it seems that its typical to get follows with jerks but not as many hooks? Thoughts?
Any particular follow up bait I should use? I threw back at both fish with the same jerk but with much faster retrieve and a bucktail- nothing.

I'll be at Green River Lake in Ky on Friday- any comments would be appreciated! Thx!

For a Hellhound or any jerkbait there's a lot you can do on the figure 8. If it was has a nice natural swimming action, which I believe a Hellhound does, you can figure 8 it like a crankbait/bucktail. You can also twich it at the boat-site and it'll dart left-and-right. It all depends on how much room you have, how far out you are, how deep the fish is/how deep you're fishing etc. My suggestion is to experiment every single cast. Maybe throw a couple of casts out in the middle of the river and practice making your 8's at the boat side. It'll pay off in the end! Also, instead of moving it quicker, you may wanna try just stopping it the next time you have one nipping at the tail of a glider.A lot of the time the fish will just grab the lure when you stop it, or just stop dead. Then you can rip it one more time and they'll try and eat it. Good luck!

Stopping the bait has worked in the past for me also. On my figure 8 using a hound I work the bait with quick snaps back and forth as I am doing the 8 adding more speed with the action. I have had more fish come up on a hound than follow behind it at the same level. I would try doing two or more 8's at boatside. Stop the bait at boat side for a second or two after the 8's also just before bringing the bait out of the water. I "T" my belly hooks also.

With Jerkbaits in general I think you get less fish following and more fish commiting. Their erratic presence is what triggers the bite. This will vary by bait as well...true gliders may get more lookers than more erratic jerks.

If I get a fish into the figure 8, I don't really do anything different than with any other bait. You are not going to get it to dart or glide in a figure 8, so I just speed it up and change depth as I go through the 8.

Hellhounds are a good bait. Play with your retreive and you will find what works for you. As some mentioned above, leave a pause at times in your retrieve to allow the bait to come to a stop, it has good neutral bouyancy.

Stopping it works well for me also, I caught a 36" last trip doing that. Also if they are following the HH I found that something that really turns them on is to start BANGING the HH. Make the HH ROCKET, jerk it hard and fast making it roll up onto it's side and then stop it. It drove my following fish crazy last time.
