Location: Sault Ste. Marie | A quick question for u guys. When inserting the lexan lips I usually do this after I'm done painting the lure. I want to start testing the lures before painting them to get rid of the duds. How do u guys keep from getting paint on the lips? Tape??? Just thought i'd ask. Thanks |

Location: Land of the Musky | Agree with the after. You may have to re-cut or clean the area to insert the lip properly but I think you will be happier with the results if you do it this way. |

Location: Freedom, WI | I install and tape the lip before painting, it takes more time but I put 2 to 3 coats of epoxy on. It almost guarantees the lip will not come out along with the glue that I put it in with to begin with. |

| I think we are missing his question. He wants to test the lures to make sure that they run true before he cements them in place to avoid painting a lure that won't run true anyway. I know that I have tossed out several painted lures in my time.
Wedging the lip in place always runs the risk of loosing the lip. Tape on the lip to make sure it stays? Not sure.
I know that I'm sitting here with crankbaits that have the groove cut and I'm wondering the same thing. I'm just doing them for myself, so I'm going to put the lips in, test them, and tape them when I paint them.
I'm new at this crankbait stuff myself, so I'd like to know too. How do you test the lures for accuracy before painting?

I cut my lip slots so that the lips are snug in them and then I test them in the water. I take the lips back out to paint.

| When I make crankbaits, I attach the lip in first then prime, test and then paint. Nothing is more disapointing than finishing a lure with a flawless paint job and not having it run true. I use painters tape to cover the lip.

| Since I am only making them for myself, I think getting the lip right and the lure running correctly is priority. I'll tape the lips and paint the ones that run right.
Thanks for help.
