Location: Indiana | I've heard that a ton of times, and never really thought about it until I was bored this morning at work. Why is it a cardinal sin to set the hook a second time? What if a poor guy was caught off guard on the intial strike, reeled in the slack, got a good bend in the rod, and gave a good rap to make sure the hooks were driven home??? Not that I myself ever get caught off guard. And not that I have Sally hooksets either...I set the hooks like a 6'4" professional body builder who likes to eat little kittens for breakfast.
I'm guessing the answer is that you will lose the fish, since pretty much every article I read says so. But why? Anyone want to explain the mechanics of it?

Location: In a shack in the woods | If the fish Is facing towards you sometimes you can rip them right out. If you do feel the need to set again let the fish turn and face away from you. That way you are pulling it in to the fish rather than away. |

Location: Michigan | Dont really know exactly what the reason is but I believe most people think some slack in the line can occur when getting ready to set the hook the second time and therefore gives the fish the ability to shack the hooks free. |

Location: Hayward, WI | I think the theory is that you set the hooks the first time, and the second time just enlarges the hole in the fish's mouth and gives them a better chance of shaking free. I always also feel like if you have a fish marginally hooked just by the skin on the tip of it nose, that second rip can pop the hooks right out.
I almost always set once and seem to have a pretty decent hookset/landed fish ratio, but I do think that if you didn;t really get much of a hookset right away, it probably isn't a bad idea to tighten up again and give a little extra pop to make sure the hooks have seated. I wouls say this is probably only when you had slack in the line or something, and went to set the hook and got almost nothing. Even if you just had good tension right away, I think keeping good tension will land a lot of fish (hooks catch on the way out if they weren't seated...and are sharp).

Location: Pelican Rapids, MN | I had a client a few years ago that lost two enormous fish due to double hook sets - He had both low 50 inch fish eat in shallow water and gobble down a Mid-Lowrider and a Raddog spinnerbait. Both fish went into a head shake, and the bait got pulled on the second set. I told him after the first fish to lay off the second hookset, but he said he saw a famous musky fisherman do it the other day on TV.
On a flip-flop note - When live baiting or fishing slow with heavy rubber, I will set twice if I feel like I didn't get a good set the first swing. With pounders and such, often I get hit on the top of my pull, and the body swing set feels inadequate to me, so I reel down quick and pop 'em again. |
