does the wis river have a season for muskies or is it open all year long like walleye. My cousin told me that the guy at the bait shop in adams told him that everything is open year round except sturgeon,I told him that muskie still has a season even though it`s the wisconsin river.I`m pretty sure I`m right but correct me if I`m wrong

Musky has a season.  You are correct.

muskies are closed in Wisconsin Dec 1 through the first Saturday in May (south) or through Memorial Day weekend Saturday (north), even on the river systems.

From the 2009 WDNR Regs

Southern Zone
(inland waters south of Highway 10/Waldo Blvd)
Muskellunge: May 2 to Dec. 31;Minimum length limit of 34" with a daily bag limit of 1

Northern Zone
(inland waters north of Highway 10 Waldo Blvd—excluding WI/MI boundary waters) Muskellunge: May 23 to Nov. 30; Minimum length limit of 34" with a daily bag limit of 1

The regs list no special season for muskies in the entire state, however they do list special size limits for certain bodies of waters. Please note that the southern zone closes on Jan 1st this year.

There is a special size restriction on muskies on the WI river, it is 45 inches. This restriction is on waters both north and south of the highway 10 bridge that goes through Stevens Point, though i don't know for sure if it extends all the way down toward Adams. I bet Lambeau would know. And yes, the season on the muskies is the same on the river as it is the rest of the state, though it is open year round for pike, walleye and smallmouth.

There is a walleye guide who posted on another site that he was just crushing muskies on the WI river this spring while casting rapalas for walleyes. He said he averaged 2-4 muskies every night while fishing for walleyes. Averaging 2-3 lines broken a night as well, that must be good for the fish to have a rapala stuck down the throat. And then he obviously posted that he thinks that the muskies are targeting the walleyes as their main food source and that is why the walleye fishing is so slow. No surprise there! I asked him if there is a high population of rough fish in the river because that is what the muskies will mainly eat, and he didn't say anything.

Howdy,

The 45" size limit, which was put into place about 5 years ago now, runs from the Dubay dam(all of Stevens Point Flowage) down through and including Castle Rock. Why I chose Castle rock as the end point when writing the resolution, I cannot say other than the next stretch down was not managed for Muskies, and we didn't want to bite off more than we could chew. Knowing that Muskies are present all the way down through, including, and below Lake WI, I am tempted to revisit the issue, and try to incorporate more of the river to the north(Wausau are) and south, into the higher 45" limit zone. It has proven to be effective, already, where in place. Anyone living in these areas, north or south, that would be willing to help drum support in your locales, feel free to email. I alreadt have the resolution written, for future use.

I was pretty sure I was right on the muskie season, but somebody needs to tell this guy that runs the bait shop this.I`m not sure when he told my cousin, but if this guy still thinks everything is open year round then somebody needs to tell him he is wrong.I know of muskies being caught by the castle rock dam earlier this spring, now I`m wondering if any of them were kept thinking they were legal,as far as I know there is no size limit signs posted by the castle rock landings that I can remember.I`ll have my cousin say something to him the next time he goes in for minnows, probably this weekend he will be walleyen it.
