I have a topraider and it is supposed to run true at any speed to 6-8miles/hour according to the adds I read in the magazines. Now, I don't think I achieve this speed when cranking but even retrieved at very slow speeds the topraider does 360's. This is not all the time but about 2-3 times per retrieve. I can't figure 8 it if I need to (pike don't like this too much) because when I pull the lure underwater it does 360's all the time. I thought these were keel-weighted? Has anybody else had this problem? I do feel it is very bouyant. Maybe that's the problem because the ones I saw Joe Bucher use in his video lay deeper in the surface.

Is there a way to make them run true? I think they are hollow so I don't think I can add a weight system to it. Overall it's a great size for pike, I think.

I was wondering that to because my Topraider does the same thing. Maybe we should send them back to Bucher lures to get them replaced.

None of my Topraiders roll over on retrieve and they sit down in the water (bottom half submerged). But I don't crank them real fast either. I usually use only enough speed to rotate the rear section and produce that highly effective plop, plop, plop, plop, SMACK!!...[:p]

I have a topraider that does the same thing. I dont think I'll send it back though. It still works, plus I wouldn't think of returning a lure that is loaded with teath and hook marks.

Divini I noticed the same thing on the 8 when I go to dip my rod in the water an make it go under the surface it does those 360's. I didn't think anything of it but now that you guys say it I might have to return it or something because it's still in great condition.

I don't submerge topraiders on a figure 8. In fact, I don't submerge surface baits at all. I keep them on the surface and just speed them up a bit or even better go with a quick, hard rip and slight (almost non-existent) pause technique. If this doesn't get a strike, I then go with a rubber creature jigged over the side beneath the boat, followed by a toss-back jerkbait if the jigging fails to result in a strike. This certainly isn't the only presentation possible, it may not even be the best, but it has produced for me and I don't get the roll-over you're mentioning. Just my 2 cents.

They should not spin Id send them in,,, I Have noticed that if you retrive them too fast they roll to one side,,,My fav color is the old field mouse because it has a black stripe on the back so if you see the stripe is centered on the retrive you know your at the right speed or at least not too fast,, I may try painting a visable stripe down the center of all my tail baits

When they first came out I believe there was a similar problem. It was caused by the shrink tubing on the rear hook being too long and catching on the rotating part of the body (if I remember rightly). The cure was to cut the shrink tube back a bit.

I had the same thing as Beaver, weight came loose and it did not track right after that. I explained to them that it already had multiple blow ups and fish caught on it,(i.e. was used), they replaced it anyways. Great company with great service.

p.s. no matter how good they run on top of the water, they will always spin when you subsurface them. I asked about that recently with John Stellflue of Oneida Esox guide service (my recent Ashton Auction guide) , he always "plunges" them on the figue eight and has a close friend who caught a very nice fish going that.
