Muskie Fishing -> General Discussion -> Calcutta 400-?

The bride (of 30 years) just bought me a Calcutta 400 for Father's day. I've heard it's the best around and also heard people say they have a lot of problems with them. I have several C3s and C4s and have had no problems with any of them. The Calcutta looks like a really well made reel. Should I hold onto it or trade it in for something else?
Thanks - Tom []

Well I can't say what you should do, but I can pass my experience with them to you. I own 3 and to be honest I wouldn't use any other reel, except for maybe the calcutta 400TEs. I had mine for years and except for routine maintainance have had no trouble with them. I'd say to keep it and use it one season and if then you still don't like it, then consider trading it. If you do though, just let me know. lol

Muskiekid, the reel is junk, why don't you give it to me. Actually, I have one and I had a problem with it in the first year but nothing since. It's been pretty good and casts and feels really smooth.

Sounds like I have a new reel. Thanks for your response. Now, mmmmm-maybe a new rod to go with it?

I will contribute to what there saying, It's unbelieveable feeling reel. Casts really far and its really smooth. What I notice between it and my abu is it's much easier to reel in.

Tried it out on father's day. No fish, but sure enjoyed the new reel. Casts further & smoother than my C3s. Great reel.

Kid

No need to buy another reel - it will still be casting
when they find you drifting aimlessly and need to
pry it from your gnarled, arthritic rigormortised
hands after you had a 'railroad tie' smash your bait
at boatside exloding your heart and filling your 'depends'[]

You know that look you get when you cast those big lures those bass fishers look about every cast you make and then they stare at you while your around while I get an even worse stare when I make huge casts with this Calcutta you should see some of the looks I get.

Yep. Trouble is, now I'm spoiled. Only way to deal with being spoiled is buy another one. Trouble is, my wife bought this one for me and knows how much they cost! I have so much stuff already, I can sneak some of it in. However, the gold color or the reel kind of stands out. Think I should paint them to resemble a C3?

Easy one dude...come home + start yelling "daggone dude, look what I won!!!" Works for me; she thinks I won 75 per cent of what I got. Also you can purchase a reel cover or 2 to hide the shiny new toys. [:0]

Sponge Bob: Great idea. That should be good for a lot of stuff. Wondering...do you think she'll believe I won a new pickup, boat & trailer?

Daggone dude!!! One thing at a time...BUT- it's worth a try; since you've been married for so long you may as well do it...I went to N.C. one Saturday morning...was planning on JUST looking...came back that afternoon w/ a new boat, galvanized trailer, motor/accessories etc...she pulls up 20 minutes after I do...walks past me to the door, stops + said "hey, I like that...did you call the credit union?"...I said " no, I put it on your VISA"...she laughed + headed toward the front door...the key turns, SHE turns + screams "you what???!!!", then corners me...I told her this one was the only one they had left + that she should put a limit on her cards...needless to say I was at the bank early Monday morning begging + trying to explain what I'd done...I was immediately labeled an idiot + bailed out...what the hay dude..DO IT![:sun:]

Cool. Sounds like a plan. Wondering...does your wife have an identical twin named Betty (my wife's name)? Funny how wives are. I've found that sometimes if I'm upfront about buying something, no problem. But, if I'm sneaky (and get caught)....watch out!!! If I showed up with a boat in the driveway, I'm not sure what would happen. Hopefully laugh. She has suggested I get a better boat. Trouble is, when they say that, it's usually the kind of boat that they have in mind and not a pure fishing machine. Either way, sounds like we both have good wive. Take care. Wondering, what part of Virginia you live in? Tom

Outside of Roanoke...4 hrs from DC area, Jamestown, Hampton etc. Used to live in Ocean City MD a long time ago. I couldn't find a better wife if I was a millionaire + on my deathbed! Funny thing is I met her at the post ofice where I work...swore up/down I'd stay single the rest of me life. What she sees in me is beyond comprehension; she is quiet, intelligent + nice in all other ways...just opposite of me! Guess she's like a lot of girls...they see a malnourished pitiful looking puppy + just have to take them home![;)]

Sponge Bob: Sounds like you're a lucky fellow to me. Ever fish the "Chick"? I used to fish there back in the 70s. It was a great place to fish. I used to camp out at Ed Allen's Campground. Wondering if it's still a good place to fish?

Haven't been there in over 30 yrs...Dad used to fish there alot. They had a basket of fish eaten by wild hogs once when the tide went out; they had gone to lunch + they were gone when they got back...lol! They would fish Wachapreague(sp), Tangier Island etc also.Uncle had a house at Colonial Beach + they would stay there some too. Every yr. some company in Richmond would put together a fishing trip for his office + they fished the Bay + surrounding islands as well. All my relatives in the Bay area have passed away so we I don't get down there as much anymore. Nephew just finished college in Va Beach so now there are none! The rockfish are thick down the coast now + the crowds are too. The area has grown in population in unreal proportions + I now take the 460E route + hit 17S through the Dismal Swamp + head down to N.C....seems like all the "secret spots" are becoming REAL scarce! Funny: I've got a week's vacation in Williamsburg myself. Gonna wait until it cools down a bit. Lots of walkin' involved. Neat place. Take care - Tom
