| I have a 1999 V Max 225. As of last year it has become very hard to start, but only after it has run. The first start of the day is normal. It also runs pretty smokey. Anyone have any thoughts? Kind of one of those deals a dealer hates. They need to put it in the water to replicate. Thanks for any thoughts. |

First off, what kind of oil are you using, and when was the last time you decarbonized the system? If you have not decarbonized, get a can of "Mercury powertune" which is like a spray can of Seafoam. Get the motor up to temperature, then set the idle high, spray into the throttle body/carb throats. The motor will start to bog down and blow a bunch of white smoke, but keep going. When the motor is about to quit (probably will not on it's own) shut it down and spray into the throat another 10 seconds or so. Let the motor sit for about 1/2 hour to an hour. Then...take it to the lake and open it up. you will have a bunch of white smoke for a while, but after doing so, the motor should run better.
Once you get home, let the motor cool off and change the plugs.
If you are using normal yamalube, I would suggest switching to a synthetic like Amsoil. It will smoke quite a bit less and will not foul up the system anywhere near as fast as conventional 2 stroke oil.
Just a couple of things to consider before taking it in... Easy things to try that are not costly and more or less preventative maintenance.

I use Amsoil. Started 2 years ago. Supposedly the dealer did a de-carbon clean last spring. I was hoping for an easy answer.

Location: Kodiak, AK | Did he decarb the O2 sensor as well? Yamaha VMAX's are greaet (I have one) but they've got two mechanical issues that arise. One is the three fuel pumps on the right hand side, the other is the O2 sensor. Both can be problematic. If you're smoking, it could be alot of things, but if you've recently been decarbed, well try it again because it never hurts, it sounds like you may be running rich and smoking. Usually fuel pumps are sympomatic with a rough running engine or an engine losing rpms. Simple smoking and a hard start....check and clean the O2 sensor, and check your plugs. How do they look? This will tell us alot. |

Location: Stones throw away...finally!! | My 02 Vmax 225 smokes at start up, no matter if it is the first start of the day at the ramp, or the tenth moving from spot to spot. I have asked numerous marinas and they all tell me the same thing...they smoke. I guess I shouldn't complain as my 620 tickles the 60 mph mark. |
