I belive I am having a problem with the instant anti-reverse on my new ABU reel. I have had several occassions where the reel handle turns backwards a 1/4 to full revolution (if I am not holding the handle securely) when I set the hook. The ABU I have is an Ambassadeur 6601CB purchased from Cabelas. The reel appears to have the same specs as a C4 and I believe it is a Cabelas exclusive. Maybe one of you ABU connoisseurs can tell me if this particular reel is a lemon with cheapened up Cabelas specs or did I just get a reel with a bad anti-reverse? Listed below is a link to the reel on Cabelas website.

Thanks,
George

Not sure about all the answers to your questions but if you're having that problem I'd send it in to Abu Garcia's service department and I'm sure they'll get that thing fixed.

I used Abu 6601C4's. I've run into that situation before. And my brother has as well on his Abu Record.

The first two C4's I bought were perfect...need maintenance and all, but out of the box for the first 1/2 season they were completely flawless and just need a cleaning now and again.

The third one I bought did the EXACT same thing as you described on the first day out...barely any use. I took that back the next week to Gander and picked up another one. Did the same thing again! I took that one back too and finally got one that didn't have that spin back reaction to setting a hook (or working a jerk bait).

My guess is it was a batch issue. Gander probably had reels that came off the line one after the other, and there was a glitch in a few of them that wasn't picked up. Once I got one of the other ones, it worked fine just like my previous reels. My brother took back his Recrod to Gander and got another one with the same issue...again, probably came off the line at the same time.

Here's my suggestion...take it back and get your money back. Go to a different store (or same store different location) and pick up another one. I'd be willing to bet the next one you get will be fine.

Some people might wonder why I buy them...cause they're cheap and easy to fix.

make sure there is no grease on the anti-reverse bearing, it wouldn't be uncommon for a little bit to settle in there from shipping, etc. I would try opening it up and taking a paper towel or something to clean off the bearing. The AR bearing should be dry, or lightly oiled, but grease will make it slip.

I'm not sure the issue is grease in the bearings. It's too regular. When I was having those issues with those reels, I would throw a jerk bait out...and every other pull of the bait, the handle would spin backwards making a snarl. The only way to stop that would be to hold the handle of the reel tight the whole time...

The spool spins backwards and the reel handle spins backwards...so no gears are slipping in the reeling mechanism or clutch or with the thumbar or anything else for that matter. It even does it when the reel cast control brake is tightened. The only explaination is the anti-reverse.

Now the only time it does is is when you're making sharp quick pulls...like walking the dog with a jerk bait or setting the hook. I just think antireverse must not be sitting quite right.

Just remember....save your reciepts and you can get always take it back or exchange it with abu

I second the "too much grease on the bearing". I've seen it happen on a few Abu's and I highly doubt this "cabelas exclusive" has any different parts than any other abu of that generation. Sometimes new reels come way over-lubed. If you're not comfortable tearing apart the reel yourself, I would pay the shipping just for peace of mind. If the reel is brand new, I'm sure Abu will take care of you.
