Posts: 317 Location: Grafton, WI | I posted this on Walleyefirst too, but wanted to make sure I got a broad audience (didn't know how many frequent both boards).... I'm thinking of adding a kicker to my 1750 Fishhawk for trolling, and looking for opinions / suggestions. I'm not looking for something to keep me out in 2-4 footers (I'll head for dock before taking on more than I need to for a fish). Just something to keep me in the 1.0 - 2.0 mph range without adding a ton of weight and spending a ton of money. I've seen some good deals on 4-strokes in the 4-6hp range... Would a 4hp 4 stroke work for me in the above setting? I also like the idea of the 4hp since it has the built-in tank (can also tie into main gas line) and I could use it on my jon boat too.

Posts: 529 Location: Not Where I Want To Be | Esoxmd I had the same boat prior to the boat i have now and had a 4 hp 4st Yamaha on it. It will handle that boat just fine. I used mine for trolling for eyes. I think if your looking to troll for ski's you might want to go with more hp.

Posts: 3480 Location: Elk River, Minnesota | I'd say go a little more. The extra weight is a non issue, but more hp means lower RPM while under load since it will take less RPM to get the performance you desire. Definitely not to say a 4hp couldn't do it, but the boat alone is 1100 pounds...you put a bunch of gear in, the outboard, 2 guys, etc...that 4hp is going to work a bit.. I'd say find a good 6 or 8hp. It will run smoother since it will have 2 cylinders instead of 1. You can also find a better selection of props (Solas 4 blade) to get more thrust, and lower pitch. The extra weight will help the bow of the boat while under way as well. With more weight in the rear, the bow will act like it is lighter since the center of gravity of the whole rig will have moved back. This translates into needing less trim angle to get a decent performance out of the big motor. Also...on bigger lakes, and canadian lakes, that kicker motor is your way off the lake in the event something happens to the big motor. The extra HP could come in really handy, especially if the weather changes (which, up here it can in a very short amount of time). Steve
