Posts: 1663 Location: Kodiak, AK | There's several different methods of hook sharpening. Have a look here- I use a file, not a hone and I personally file toward the hook point and they get plenty sharp. I warn people about my flies after a buddy sliced his thumb open on one of mine. It's pretty easy to get a hook sharp with a little practice. Attachments ---------------- post-3784-1236054580_thumb.jpg (30KB - 121 downloads)

Posts: 425 | remember, the bigger the hook, the more you should sharpen. On my baits with 7/0 hooks, I sharpen like crazy. Never want to loose a giant fish just because you were lazy and didn't want to take the time to sharpen!!

| Just started sharpening hooks. Never really saw it being all that important but the forums convinced me that I need to. I bought the 4-5" luhr jensen yellow handled file from musky hunter store and was amazed at how sharp I could get them. Same as me though, I did not know the proper technique but ehat seems to work best for me is: first file the sides to a point, then lightly file the frontside up to the tip. That's the way I've been doing it now and they are definitely sharp, however, I would like to hear from more experienced fishermen the way they do it. | |||
