This question is for those of you who use a 9.9 kicker for trolling in addition to your main motor. I am looking at purchasing a Crestliner 1850 fishhawk and am stuck between getting a single 115 - 150 4 stroke over a 2 stroke main motor with a 9.9 4 stroke kicker.

With this type of setup, what speed range would I expect to get using the kicker for trolling? Also, we have many 10HP limitt lakes where I fish. Would a kicker be able to handle motoring a boat such as the 1850 from spot to spot and what would I expect to get for a top-end speed?

I would appreciate any comments you may have.

Using a 9.9 kicker on an 1850 you will get a max of about 6 mph. You can change props and I think that will speed it up or slow it down a bit depending on what you put on it for a pitch probably not alot though. I have a dealer putting a prop on my kicker this spring that will bring my speed up at lower rpms. I do not like the gardern tractor sound when I am trolling at 4 plus mph for muskies.

hope that helps.

I had an 1850 Fishawk with a 150 Vmax on it, T-8 kicker. Kicker can handle that boat fine. The T-8 had the high thrust prop on it and I could get it up to 5-5.5mph. I would get a kicker even if I had a 4 stroke main engine. I fish big water a lot. Having a kicker is invaluable. Your main engine craps out, you’ve got a way to get home as your electric won’t get you very far in big wind/water. Also, I used my kicker a LOT in big wind to keep the boat positioned into the wind while using my electric to move me along. I wouldn’t want to run my main engine all the time to do that….. my .02$

I have an 04 1850 fishhawk with a 115 Optimax and a 9.9 Bigfoot kicker.

I get 38.8 mph on the gps with a 17 pitch aluminum prop, loaded or empty.

I get 5.6 mph on the gps with the 9.9 kicker WFO.

I have a 185 Navigator with a 115 Yamaha 4 stroke. It'll idle down to about 2 mph, depending on wind and waves. I just picked up a T8 and I'm not sure what kind of speeds I'll be getting with it but I'm sure that between the two motors I'll be able to do any kind of trolling I want to do.

I have the 165 navigator with a 90hp 2 stroke motor on it. I have a johnson 8hp 4 stroke motor with a high thrust Solas propeller on it with very low pitch (5 pitch, 4 blade) At full speed on the kicker, I see 5.6 mph, but I can troll it down to about 1mph.

If you are considering purchasing one with a big motor 2 stroke as compared to 1 big 4 stroke, I'd suggest going with the two motors rather than 1. Reason: safety on the water. If that big motor goes down, the kicker is your means off the lake. Also, the kicker will give you more options with trolling since it will troll down slower than what you can do with a big motor...even a 4 stroke. There is a limit to everything, but a kicker gives you more options with the safety aspect to boot.

Kicker guys...here's my ?.
I am looking for a kicker in either a t-8 or the standard 8hp by yamaha, I would like to stick with Yammy as it would match my main motor. I only want the motor for insurance incase the main motor goes down, I will use the main motor to hold in big wind along with the trolling motor, being I have a tiller. What's the difference between the two and what would you recommend for my application....I see the standard 8 hp is cheaper than the t-8. are speeds the same? thanks Mike

The T8 has a much lower gear ratio as compared to the regular 8hp motor. Both run off the same engine design, but the T8 runs, I believe, somewhere around a 2.92:1 gear ratio as compared to something like 2:1 for the regular 8hp. The prop is much bigger both in diameter and lower in pitch which is why it performs so much better in pushing big heavy boats. The T8 will troll slower, and in backtrolling, have more power.

If you are only looking for safety purposes, I'd suggest save the extra $$ and get the regular 8hp. you can use it for other purposes (smaller boat, trolling etc.) as well.
