So who's got a water pressure gauge and what are the normal readings you see on it at different RPM's etc? Never had one on a boat, just wonder what's normal. I'm getting conflicting answers from different marina's and people who "seem" to be in the know.

Thanks!
Jeff

what kind of motor and horsepower is it? I have a mercury 175 efi and normal water pressure at top speed should be from 10 to 13 psi.

That's the same thing i've got, I see closer to 20psi running and 6-8 at idle. Some shops/people are telling me to be concerned, others like you are saying i'm fine or that's what they get.

Hiya,

I have a yamaha 90hp which is lifted off the transom by a setback plate, so it's higher than the 4th bolt hole, but 4 inches back. At full throttle and trimmed to the best it can be, my pressure is around 15...depending on water temperature. When travelling below full throttle, I am around 20 psi.

When you start getting down to below 15 psi at speed and you are not lifted above the standard holes on the motor, it's time to change an impeller, or at a minimum get the system checked for blockage. Most likely it would be an impeller.

I'd say you have nothing to worry about...

The bass boat guys like to see it above 13 or so while up on plane, but that's all the way up on a plate. I'd say you're OK too, though the idle pressure sounds a bit on the low side. That said, I'd worry most about on-plane speed, and as long as you're not getting an alarm at idle, roll with it.

I spoke to my mercury dealer today and he said that at idle you should be 4-6 psi and at top speed 10-13 psi, this is with a new impeller. He also stated that with the 175efi you will get differant readings depending on what year the motor is, mine is a 1998 model and these are the readings I get.
