Subject: DNR tipline

I made my first call yesterday. Was fishing near a group guys that really had no respect for the people around. After confronting them about ethics they pretty much told me to f-off and get off the spot. I had a few more words and went to another spot. About 15 mins later I watched them catch an undersized fish and put it on stringer, which got my attention. Then another and another and another. After the 5th fish, i had enough. So I called. In hindsight it's a bitter sweet victory. The warden did come down and issued over $500 in fines, but then again I feel pretty bad that the situation came down to that. What have you done in the past, would you have done anything different?

I called a tip line a few years back, they didn't respond, over an hour went by and they called me back to ask me to follow them when they leave to get plate #s. No thanks. Fairly dissapointed. Nowhere in madison takes over an hour to get to. I thought 3 people throwing baits next to a sign that says fish refuge and the season was closed would be pretty easy money for them. Apparently the disagreed!
"Would you have done anything differently?"

Next time I'll mind my own business!

I wouldn't have felt one bit sorry. Those people are (were) harming the resource. I would have called after I had seen the 1st undersized fish on the stringer. I once called about two guys fishing in a trout stream prior to the season being open (my place of work was right next to the stream - how could it not be I was a wastewater operator). I was able to describe them looking through my binoculars and then the lady asked if I could see their car plates. I said no, but was leaving work and am driving by their car and I will get back to you. Which I did. I don't know if they ever got a ticket or not.

I don't have any patience for violators, muskies yes, them folks no.

I have taken video and pictures of people trolling on the flowage and sent it to the DNR and to my knowledge no citations have ever been issued. I have talked to the wardens and emailed the info but there is always something that prevents them from issuing citations. Out of state registrations cause problems, the guy said "friends" were using his boat, I had them on video trolling with multiple lines out and actually landing a muskie. I had some still pictures of two guys trolling with lines out and the boat registration numbers clearly readable, the guy said it was not him and the resort owner would not give the peoples names out when questioned by the warden. Last year I took a photo of a couple coming under the bridge with a huge stump in the front of the boat. They asked why I was taking a picture and I said to send into the DNR because removing stumps was against the law. I said it is posted at all the boat landings, they said they were staying at a resort and I told them they should drop the stump off on shore and when they get back to the resort check with the owner. They said they did not understand why there would be a law like that and I said otherwise everybody would haul stumps home and the shoreline would be bare. Below is the picture with the people and registration numbers cropped out.

I see that stuff going on down here all of the time. Fish caught = fish on stringer. Doesn't matter if its undersized, out of season, over the daily bag... Why should I sit back and watch someone fish out of season, half of them without a license, keeping undersized fish, etc. when I spend hundreds of dollars every year buying licenses in a bunch of states?

Screw 'em. No patience for anyone who knows better and just doesn't care. I have a bit of patience for folks that might not know any better. I will politely inform them of the rules. But if they just keep on doing it? Screw 'em.

Many times if it's posted No Tresspassing or No Fishing and the people are fishing from shore, Local Law enforcement can step in to help out it does say on the License that it must be presented to any Law enforcement officer on demand

I don't feel bad when I call. Not at all, especially unattended lines.

Good Job, Report them. I have called and emailed the MNDR about a dude who keeps fishing the metro area lakes for Muskies right at ice-off. If he's not there this year he probably got tagged......

Yell hes I would have reported them!  No question about it, and I wouldn't have had one bit of bad feeling about it either!

Case in point...last year I see a shore fisherman, who was targeting muskies, catch a musky on a sucker.  He brings it up to his truck, but keeps his gear right there at the shore.  I figure he's gonna keep fishing for muskies after catching his limit of one/day.  I see him come back towards his gear and I'm waiting for him to bait up with another sucker and keep fishing.  I get the phone out, and am ready to call the DNR if I see him make a cast.  He didn't.  He gathered his gear and headed out...probably to another place to fish for more muskies!

I had an unattended line once that had a smallmouth on it for bait. I released the fish and turned the guy in. He's been busted for it before as it turns out. I won't even say what happened the last time I encountered one.

I watched this good old boy on the chain put out foam squares with tip ups mounted in the middle of them during the summer, then went back to his home. first thing I did was call the dnr. I don't feel bad.

I personally have attempted to call the DNR as well as many friends that I fish with about people fishing in closed areas due to spawning, I recall them coming out once. Most of the time we attempt to tell the people fishing there that they can't fish there, and are told to mind our business, even though there are at least 3 signs within 10 ft that say the area closed to fishing. I have had people threaten to call the police on me for telling them they can't fished in a closed area. Next time that threat comes out I will tell them to call the cops! I think this year may call for desperate measures, I might have to go to a sign place and get a huge sign made that says in big letters NO FISHING, THIS MEANS YOU! Lets hope it doesn't have to come to that, only time will tell.

And if they don't then you do!!!!!! Two reasons, 1) you witnessed a crime being committed and 2) you were threatened.

I call whenever I see anything illegal going on. That's why they have that number.
I've turned in deer hunters, fishermen on The Mississippi River, and even followed two out of state guys for more than 15 minutes while the DNR was on the line, until they nabbed them with 10 snagged steelhead.
Call, take pictures, take videos....let them know that they are being watched.

I would encourage you to take it even a step further in areas where you live and/or fish a lot. Try to get to know the Warden personally, most of them are really not that bad of people . They are spread very thin and work hard to develop 'informant' networks within their assigned patrol areas. Get to know them a bit if possible, become one of their 'go to' guys.

Granted I am at a bit of an advantage here since their office is across the hall from mine, but I have every one of their cell numbers programmed into my phone (as well as county dispatch). Do they always respond to my call? No, sometimes other things just are more important at the moment, but I take as much info as I can and kick it to an investigator (it's best to ask them what kind of info they need to make a case so you know ahead of time). I have a great batch of officers working the areas I frequent; in fact, one of them has written 2 tickets for mishandling muskies. Our rules indicate that they must be immediately released if undersized; he has determined that letting them lay in the boat until they quit flopping enough for 'safe' handling is not 'immediate'. Wonder where he got that idea? Won both cases in court too.

I have a thing for getting people their first muskie; this year it's Game Wardens - I'm setting a goal of getting 5 of them their first this year. A little time in the boat and they take a bit more ownership of the resource they are pledged to protect.

isn't that the same as setting your tipups and going to sit in the shack???

I have reported people with no avail from the DNR, but I am not disappointed. If anything, it at least lets the DNR know that there is a problem they need to keep watch for when in the area.

I grew up in Duluth, MN where wild steelhead are protected on MN's north shore. Watched families go down to the local rivers and snag and keep wild steelhead with trebles. I would call them into TIP. I had heard that many other fisherman had the same problem with these people. They would call in and DNR would confront this group and they would pretend to not know English; just keep speaking native tongue... give me a break.

Sitting in the shack watching the tip ups is legal. If you can't respond to a flag within a reasonable time, or are a long way off...like in a house on shore...it's an unattended line.

I spoke with the DNR later on, there reply was that because they went back inside the house, it was illegal. just like jug fishing some fish will swallow the hooks.
I don't see the fun in that unless you think with a knife and fork.

I just bought a huse on a small private lake with only a couple of areas where people can carry down small boats. This winter was bad for Illegal tip ups and over harvest of under size pike. I saw one guy with 6 tipups out and he was watching them from a house( rental cottage) on the shore. About every two hours he would go out with his quad and check the lines. The Michigan D.N.R. does not have an access area so I am going to offer my property to them. I have watched guys take Crappies and Blue gills way over the limit many times this summer as well. I have had it. I talked to me neighbor today and he agrees. They busted 6 guys in February for going across private property to get to the lake. State police wrote trespass tickets and told them if they came back they would impound thier cars. Dont feel bad for turning in violators. They deserve it. Kingfisher
