Posts: 337 Location: Central WI | When making your single strand wire leaders what size diameter wire do you use? I picked up some 174# Tooth Proof at Fleet Farm here in town. It's the biggest they carry with a .029 diameter. It should do the trick but it does seem a little flimsier than the Bucher leaders I was using last year. Just curious what has worked for others as far as the wire size?

Posts: 8772 | I've gone up to 400# for jerkbait leaders, as it's the only thing that doesn't get bent up when you're working a bait really hard and the leader gets fouled in the hooks. You have to be selective with it though - it will weight the nose of some lures down and completely kill the action on others. I think for most applications, 174# is fine. If you're making your own they cost next to nothing, so replacing them often isn't a big deal.

Posts: 416 Location: Madtown, WI | I think 174# is about the highest I can use in my leader maker. I can't find a link to the one I use but it's the one that's sold at Gander and is shaped like a C-clamp. Like esoxaddict mentioned, 174# is plenty strong and if it gets bent, it only costs you pennies to swap out. Just save the ball bearings and snaps if they are still in tact.

I don't think I would go any heavier, but at the same time there are only a few places I could see going lighter - like possibly small twitchbaits. curleytail

These also work well for smaller baits too. The wire is cheap and you can make them in the boat, plus re-use your components off the leader.

Posts: 2894 Location: Yahara River Chain | I have used heavier wire, but that was for big jerkbaits. I think I use .035 wire and that was rated about 250# test. That wire would be way too heavy for topwaters like Jackpots and One Eyed Willies, it would just kill the action of those topwwaters.

Posts: 1710 Location: Mt. Zion, IL | .035 is all I use. It does not effect my weagles or topraiders due to the weight like some would think. I also heat shrink the snap and leader together to keep the hooks from catching the leader on gliders. I've never had a problem with the leader being too heavy. I use it from everything to magnum Super D's, to spoons, to cranks and topwaters.

Posts: 39 | Do I have to use a Haywire twist on 174# wire, or can I just us 5-6 barrel wraps? Oskar

Posts: 81 Location: Toronto, Ontario | I make my own, 174# single strand, haywire twist with shrink wrap on the wraps. Cheap leaders, great leaders.
