What is a good bolt cutter thats reasonably priced. $40 seems like alot for cutters. I know it's not worth getting cutters that wont cut 5/0 or bigger hooks. But money is tight and i know cutters are a very important tool. I've heard knipex are nice but they are expensive. Jimus

Posts: 4266 | They are expensive when you compare them to cheap tools. As far as cutters go, you won't find a better one, or one that lasts as long. You can buy cheap ones and be seeing daylight between the jaws after a few cuts. I have a pair of Knipex that is over 5 years old, and they are still like new. Spend the forty bucks and either tie them up or make them float, and they will last you a very long time. The cheap ones need to be replaced every couple years, especially if you are cutting 4x hooks. I always carry at least one pair of Knipex and at least one pair of big, needle-nose Visegrips. You want to make the release as fast and fool-proof as possible for the good of the fish. Buy a pair of Knipex instead of 2 muskie lures, the fish will thank you, and you'll be happy when it comes time to cut hooks out of a fish. Beav

Posts: 574 | I bought cheap ones for too long. Having a hook in my hand with a cheap cutter in the boat changed my mind pretty quick. Check ebay, or cash in your change? Well worth buying a quality cutter.

Posts: 130 Location: Chicago | You can get a pair of used knipex off ebay for a little more than the cost of a new pair of cheap cutters, you just got to watch and be patient. Knipex is really a quality tool.

Posts: 20249 Location: oswego, il | I have had friends tell me this bolt cutter or that one works great only to find out it does not when it comes time to cut a hook. I always bring my knipex with me even in someone else's boat. one guy took his pliers after seeing what his wouldn't do and the knipex did, he tossed them in the drink. I learned the hard way myself, one badly hooked fish in an area where you can't get great leverage on a thick hook with the wrong pliers will make you change in a hurry. If you think about how much we spend to chase these creatures and intend to release them, it's actually a small investment.

Location: Des Moines IA | Slamr gave me a double 10 bucktail this morning, and as I was leaving I went to put my shoe on while holding it, and slipped. Had to push it through and cut it. Thank God for Knipex, and Todd Forcier's medical kit!!!

Posts: 71 Location: Loves Park, IL | I have Knipex bolt cutters and some Craftsman 8" bolt cutters I found at Sears a couple of years ago. The Craftsman cutters are very comparable to the Knipex.....might want to check them out....they were less than $20 and carry the Craftsman lifetime warranty. CheapTrix

Posts: 2687 Location: Hayward, WI | There may be other cutters out there that work as well as the Knipex for less money, but I would have to see it to believe it. I had a fish engulf a Weagle once. When I saw how it was hooked I thought "oh no, that's a dead fish." But, a few seconds, carefully reaching in through the gill cover and doing a little surgery, that fish released strong without shedding a drop of blood. I'll never fish in my or anybody else's boat without a pair of Knipex. Go to this link on Ebay. But it now for $19, $6 shipping, and you have a pair for $25 bucks. Priceless item in my boat. curleytail Edited by curleytail 3/7/2009 1:15 PM

Posts: 531 Location: Hugo, MN | Buy a pair of Knipex, when you find yourself hooked to a thrashing fish you'll be glad you didn't cheap out. There are so many things in fishing that you can get by without. This is one of those things, like a good landing net, that people shouldn't leave the boat launch without. Next to lifejackets, I'd say it's the most important piece of safety equipment in my boat.

Posts: 31 Location: Fairfield, IA | Bought a pair of Knipex 7131200 for $35 + $5 S/H on eBay. Haven't used them yet for cutting hooks but they are great for cutting wires. Fit the hand well and seem to be well made. Dave.

Posts: 2687 Location: Hayward, WI | Muskiecut, I have no problem using them with one hand. As far as strength goes, you'll never need to use two hands to cut any musky hook. They'll cut 8/0 Mustad 3551's easy. As far as just ease of use, I'm sure the spring loaded model makes using them with one hand a little easier, but mine don't have that feature and haven't given me any problems. curleytail

Posts: 135 Location: Irvine, KY | Thanks curleytail, my current cutters work great.... but they require 2 hands. I just realized how useless they would become if one of my hands got hooked to a pissed off fish! I foresee a slightly less painfull future for myself and a muskie as a result of this thread.... Posts: 7088 Location: Northwest Chicago Burbs | We had a little "incident" at my house yesterday where a gentleman who will remain nameless thought it might be a good idea to put on his shoe WHILE holding a bait with two 5/0 hooks in his hand. Suffice to say, one of the hooks met the webbing between two fingers and had the hook to the barb embedded in said webbing. I quickly went out to my garage, retrieved the knipex hook cutters and with a little pushing through flesh and a quick snip, the hook was out. My loving wife was smart/pro-active/caring enough to purchase a first aid kid that Todd Forcier puts together and markets that might seem like overkill at first glance, was great to have at the ready. With more than enough gauze, bandages, iodine wipes, and medical tape (with a pair of scissors perfect for cutting the tape) the kit had all the necessary pieces within to get the wound bandaged and the "patient" on his way within 2 minutes. So, just a few thoughts here: shoes on, THEN grab the lure. If there are lures with big hooks anywhere nearby, make sure the knipex aren't far off. Finally, buy one less lure this year, but make sure to get a first aid kit from Todd Forcier to have in the boat and/or around the house. Thanks Todd, MuskieMike didn't even bleed on the floor! Now I am wishing I'd taken some pictures....
