Has anyone ever used this before? I've got a 6'3 XH Premier, and I'm just wondering if they will let you "trade-up" for just a new Premier in a different model? I would like to trade up to a new Premier, only in the 7'6 H model. I know I would have to pay the depreciation cost of my rod, and the price difference between the two, but that won't be a problem. Just not sure if they'll let you trade up for the same series rod, just a new one? Anyone happen to know anything about this?

Though I can't speak to this definitively, I believe the upgrade program is only for those rods that have a lifetime warranty (e.g., avids, legend elites, etc), and do not include those with a limited warranty like the premiers.

EDIT: Ok, I see that I was not accurate -- I guess you CAN upgrade a rod that does not have a lifetime warranty. Cool deal!!! St. Croix rules.

the St. Croix website describes it in complete detail:
http://stcroixrods.com/content.asp?id=14

TRADE-UP PLAN
Here’s a great plan for St. Croix owners wanting to try an even higher-performing model. Hard to believe, but your undamaged ‘Croix is worth money towards the purchase of another in a series which is at least one level higher. The rules are below, but you’ll need to speak to our Customer Service Representative to complete the deal.

Here’s the phone number: 800-826-7042. When prompted for the extension number, press either 139 or 135.

But before you call, please read the following explanation of how Trade-Up works. And when you do call, please be prepared to give the model and serial numbers to our Representative. He'll need them to calculate your trade-up cost.

1. First you’ll need to determine the year of manufacture of your rod. To do this, scroll down this page to “Interpreting the Age of the Rod”. You’ll only need the year of manufacture. Rods built prior to 2001 are not eligible for Trade-Up.

2. Subtract the year of manufacture of your rod from the current year. Multiply this number by $10. This is your Depreciation Cost.

3. Return your undamaged rod to St. Croix. You may use our Discount Shipping Program to save money. Package it carefully, because damaged rods are not eligible, even if they are damaged in transit. A damaged rod will be returned to you in the condition in which we received it.

4. The formula below is used for determining the total cost. But again, please contact our Representative at 800-826-7042 Ext. 139 or Ext. 135 to confirm this cost and assist in the selection of your new rod. Acceptable methods of payment include personal check (drawn on a USA bank account) and credit card (VISA, MC, American Express, Discover).

Trade-Up Cost Calculation
Difference in current retail price between your rod and the new rod $____
Depreciation Cost ($10 per year) $____
Shipping & Handling Cost (USA and Canadian customers) $__20
Trade-Up Cost (add the three items above) $____

I have already been to the St Croix website and read that. I just don't know if it only goes for stepping up to a different rod series(Premier - Legend Tournament) or if you can trade up to just a new Premier.

1) first paragraph: "towards the purchase of another in a series which is at least one level higher." so yes, it must be a different series.

2) call them at the number listed and ASK THEM. you might be able to convince them to consider the new Premiers as different than an older Premiers since they changed the blank and raised the price.

it may be different now but two winters ago i contacted croix concerning that plan with 3 old premiers i had and at that time they kind of pro-rated them with a more than fair dollar figure but it was only to trade up to the legend series. since then i decided to have the legends custom built by keith at proedge instead of buying stock legends and when you do that the trade-up plan does not apply to the blanks themselves that are purchased to be made custom...

I know what it says, The reason I posted this is asking if anyone had ever been able to do what i'm wanting to do(trade a old premier, in for a new one), not just upgrading to a different series.

Give St Croix a call (1-800-826-7042) and ask them about it. I talked with one of their service representatives and they were pretty friendly and helpful.

i just spoke with Dan at St. Croix: 1-800-826-7042 Ext. 139. took about 2 minutes.
he was friendly and helpful, and he seemed to have some experience in the area.

yes, you have to upgrade to a higher series.
he said that he gets asked alot about whether or not you can go to a newer rod within the same series (ie., Premier-Premier), and that this is not allowed; rather it must be a rod in a higher series (ie., Premier-Legend).

Thank you, That was all I was wanting to know. I was planning on calling, but at the moment...I'm at work and don't like to make personal calls like that if I don't have to.
