Hey guys,
Just wondering how many of you guys have had the speed sensors on your Optimaxs get clogged? Mine is right now and before I stick anything in there I was wondering if anyone had any tips. I don't think it matters but I have the 225. Any help would be great.

Try using water first. Spray the intake with a garden hose, pretty high pressure. Sometimes the pick-up gets goober in it.[]

I have a 225 Merc EFI; the pitot hole does get plugged, especially hitting wood at 60 mph! I was told to use a 1/8" drill BIT, and by hand, twirl the bit in the obstruction to get pieces of it out. Don't push, let the bit's action take the booger out. That got a lot of it, the rest I was able to remove after emersion in water at high speeds, the last of it stuck out of the hole at the ramp and I could grab it and pull. Be gentle, some delicate stuff back there. m

Phil I have the same problem on the same motor, try to pick it out carefully or try the hose trick. On my old motor I used compressed air to force it free. My speedo has not worked for a few weeks now, I think today is a good day to fix that.

Thanks for the replies guys, but I just got a little confused, it the speed sensor in that itty bitty single hole on the lower unit, or the 4 holes opposite side of the prop? Just wanna clear that up before I go sticking stuff in the wrong hole...Thanks again guys.

Phil:

The holes with slots on the side of your lower unit are your water pump pickups. The hole you are looking for is on the leading edge of the lower unit and looks like a little nick from the profile of the motor. Should be about 8"? above your prop on the leading edge.

OK gotcha. I know the breather holes for the water intake, but on the Opti at the point of the lower unit on the opposite side of the lower unit gearing there are 4 holes. I didn't have it on my old engine. You guys are life savers.
