Plan on purchasing a sonar/gps and getting a navionics chip and was curious if there is a simulator mode to practice using the unit with the chip? Also what is the mapping features like without the chip is it just a plotter screen? I planned on buying a lcx-27 without the preloaded hard drive. I only ask because my home state is not in the chips range where I do most of my serious fishing, but was hoping to practice before head up.

For simulator mode hit the menu button and then select system setup. There you will see a simulator menu where you can simulate sonar, GPS and radar. To use the navionics chip start at a map page and then hit menu. Scroll down to map data and then under navionics map choice, choose your region. Then you can use the cursor to scroll around the maps. Or, if you want to just look at the map, buy the hotmaps explorer computer DVD. It has all 5 of the hotmaps premium regions and only costs $20.
