How about for backlash? What line is the best for reducing backlash?

M4L, What kind of non-levelwind reel do you use? I'm really considering buying an Avet but have been hesitant because of no levelwind. Jim

I don't know about getting backlashes, but getting them out is much easier with Cabela's Ripcord Si and Cortland Spectron. It seem I have to sit with a line pick to get out a Power Pro backlash and normally I can just pull on the other two I've mentioned and they come right out.

Is there a difference in Cortland spectron and Cortland blackspot? Is it the same line just different color? Jim

Hey M4L, Do you get problems with no levelwind on your Saltist? I found a realy good deal on an Avet but no levelwind. I would like to use it for more than just bucktails but seems from what people are saying is that they wont work with jerkbaits and such. Thanks for advice, Jim

Posts: 105 | Jim, I don't feel the Non-levelwinds are very good for jerk baits and light pulling lures. The harder pulling lures do much better. It is ideal IMO for the Cow Girl type lures, which is what I use mine for the most and hard pulling cranks. I used it for burning Depth Raiders some last year and it worked ok. The hard pulling baits help the line pile up on the spool better and keeps it nice and tight. If you get loose line pile on the spool the backlashes seem to get nasty. I think and what I've read from others, these reels surve a specific puropse and are not for all lures. If you can get a deal, go for it. It's fun to burn those 10's with little effort. That's my 2 cents, maybe others can give their take. M4L

Hey thanks alot M4L, I really appreciate the info. I found an Avet sx 5.3 for $119 no cast control on it. I might go for it. Thanks again, Jim

Posts: 105 | Jim, Just a thought here, the Avet reel you are looking at is a 5.3 gear, most guys are getting the nonlevelwinds for the fast 6.4 gears. My Saltist has the 6.4 and brings in 47"s of line per turn of the handle. This is what burns the 10's. Not saying you are making a poor choice, just want you to know the difference if you didn't already. The price looks good, but if you decide you want a faster reel you can pick up a Saltist 40 for around the same price if you look around. M4L
